The Truth About Common Digestive Health Fears
Everyone experiences digestive problems now and then, and they’re nobody’s idea of a good time. In a survey of nearly 72,000 adults in the U.S., 61% reported having had at least one gastrointestinal (GI) symptom over the previous week, and within that group, 58% said they’d had two or more GI symptoms over the past week, according to a study in a 2018 issue of the American Journal of Gastroenterology. Because symptoms like constipation, heartburn, and abdominal pain are generally vague and often don’t have an obvious cause, those suffering tend to fear the worst. “People get very concerned abo...

A man in his late 40s with chest pain
Written by Pendell MeyersA man in his late 40s with no known medical problems was at work when he suddenly experienced midsternal chest pain radiating down both arms. Approximately 1 hour after onset of symptoms he was triaged at the ED, with ongoing chest pain, normal vitals, and this triage ECG:What do you think?Twice, months apart, I sent this ECG to Dr. Smith without any context or other information (I do this many times per day, with many normal or false positive cases mixed in). The first time he responded " acute ischemia but not active occlusion " . The second time he responded " LVH and subendocardial ischem...

A Real Headache for an Anesthesia Machine Maker: “AN-A-CIN” by Heidbrink
A master purveyor of dental supplies and anesthesia machinery, Dr. Jay A. Heidbrink (1875–1957; dentist-anesthetist and manufacturer, Minneapolis, Minnesota) was perhaps the most successful American businessman and dentistanesthetist of all time. Among his more unusual acquisitions were the rights to “Anacin” and to the trademark “AN-A-CIN” (top left) for a “NO NARCOTICS” (bottom left) analgesic compounding of acetaphenetidin (phenacetin), aspirin, quinine sulfate, and caffeine. Dentist Heidbrink advertised An-a-cin for toothaches, of course, as well as for “headache, …, earache, neuritis, neuralgia, cold...

Amplatzer Cardiac Plug for Stroke Prevention in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation and Bigger Left Atrial Appendix Size
This study aims to evaluate the results associated with LAA closure with the Amplatzer cardiac plug (ACP, AGA, St. Jude Medical, Minneapolis, MN) in bigger LAA size. A total of 25 patients with NVAF underwent LAA closure with the ACP device. All patients received short-term (up to 3 months) dual-antiplatelet therapy (clopidogrel and aspirin) after the procedure and aspirin only thereafter. A transesophageal echocardiography was performed in all patients at the 3- and 6-month follow-ups. No patient was lost to follow-up (≥ 12 months in all patients). The mean age, CHA2DS2-VASc score, and HAS-BLED score were 66.2 ± 8....

Population Trends in Aspirin Use for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention 1980-2009: The Minnesota Heart Survey Preventive Cardiology
Conclusions Aspirin for CVD prevention is commonly used by a large and growing portion of the general population. It is not known if this is based on professional advice or self-prescribed use. It is also likely that many who would benefit do not use aspirin and others use aspirin inappropriately.

Incidence and predictors of Melody(®) valve endocarditis: A prospective study.
CONCLUSION: Early- and late-onset IE of the Melody valve is emerging as a catastrophic complication of PPVR. Abrupt aspirin discontinuation and additional unprotected invasive procedures during follow-up are significant predictors of Melody valve IE. Owing to its rapidly progressive nature, aggressive invasive management should not be delayed. PMID: 25445752 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Left atrial appendage closure followed by 6 weeks of antithrombotic therapy: A prospective single-center experience
Conclusions: Implantation of both LAA closure devices can be performed with high success rates in high-risk patients. Postprocedural 6 weeks antithrombotic therapy followed by aspirin therapy needs to be confirmed in a larger study.
