How to use the aortic valve calcium score to improve the results of transcatheter aortic valve implantation with a self-expanding prosthesis
CONCLUSION: A high aortic valvular calcium score, assessed by computed tomography scan, is an independent predictor of suboptimal prosthesis implantation outcomes in direct TAVI.PMID:35527213 | DOI:10.1016/j.acvd.2022.03.001

To Turn Over Rocks for Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement: Closure Time With Adenosine Diphosphate to Support Decisions in a Complex Transcatheter Aortic Valve-in-Valve Procedure
We report a patient with severe aortic stenosis with an extremely high calcium score who underwent a transfemoral transcatheter aortic valve replacement with an Evolut R (Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN) and needed a valve-in-valve approach with a SAPIEN 3 (Edwards Lifesciences, Irvine, CA) to treat significant paravalvular leak. Interestingly, the closure time with adenosine diphosphate, assessed using the Platelet Function Analyzer 100 (Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics, Los Angeles, CA), measured after each important step of this complex procedure, correlated very well with the severity of the paravalvular leak.RésuméNous rap...

Effects of Sweet Cherry Polyphenols on Enhanced Osteoclastogenesis Associated With Childhood Obesity
Conclusions Our study, to our knowledge, is the first demonstrating in obese children a spontaneous osteoclastogenesis inhibited by polyphenols from sweet cherry extracts, through the reduction of TNFα, without affecting cell viability. We also demonstrated that the spontaneous osteoclastogenesis observed in PBMCs from obese children is supported by the high percentage of circulating CD14+/CD16+ cells and the elevated levels of RANKL and TNFα. Our study opens future perspectives for the use of cherry extracts, appropriately formulated as nutraceuticals as preventive in healthy children and therapeu...

P2X7 Receptor Expression in Patients With Serositis Related to Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Conclusion: Our data indicate reduced P2X7R expression and function in SLE patients compared with HC and, conversely, increased IL-6 signaling. The possible consequences of reduced P2X7R, mainly on cytokines network deregulation and lymphocyte proliferation, will be further investigated as well as the role of IL-6 as a possible therapeutic target especially in lupus serositis. Introduction With the first reports of Burnstock in 1970s, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) has passed from a simple molecule devoted to energy reserve, to a relevant extracellular signaling molecule able to mediate numerous physiological and pat...

Diet Rich in Animal Protein Promotes Pro-inflammatory Macrophage Response and Exacerbates Colitis in Mice
In conclusion, we have shown that interactions between dietary protein of animal origin (casein) and gut microbiota increases sensitivity to intestinal inflammation. This pro-inflammatory effect is not dependent on adaptive immunity, but it is driven by activated Ly-6Chi monocytes and subsequent pro-inflammatory tuning of innate immunity. Our results suggest that IBD patients may benefit from changing the source of dietary protein and outline the possibility to use specific antibiotic or probiotic treatment aimed at gut microbiota. Controlled in vivo Bone Formation and Vascularization Using Ultrasound-Triggered Release of Recombinant Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor From Poly(D,L-lactic-co-glycolicacid) Microbubbles
In conclusion, we demonstrated the use of VEGF-loaded MB for enhancing calvarial defects by UTMD burst release. Results showed that VEGF-loaded MB combined with UTMD promoted osteogenesis in vitro and enhanced bone repair in vivo compared with those groups without UTMD treatment. Ethics Statement This study was carried out in accordance with the recommendations of Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, the Southern Medical University Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. The protocol was approved by the Southern Medical University Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. Author Contri...

Hot Topics in Neuroscience: Is Electroconvulsive Therapy a Treatment for Depression Following Traumatic Brain Injury?
Conclusion TBI is a distinct and complex pathophysiological entity. Neurocognitive deficits and mood disorders are common sequelae of TBI. While nonmodifiable factors influence risk of developing post-TBI depression, there is also evidence that biological factors are involved. People who have suffered TBI are at increased risk for ictal events and cognitive impairment. ECT has been documented to successfully treat patients with post-TBI mood symptoms in only three published cases. While these vignettes suggest that ECT might be a safe and effective therapeutic option in treating individuals with post-TBI depression, more r...

Effects of Orally Ingested Arsenic on Respiratory Epithelial Permeability to Bacteria and Small Molecules in Mice
Conclusions: Peroral arsenic has little effect on local airway immune responses to bacteria but compromises respiratory epithelial barrier integrity, increasing systemic translocation of inhaled pathogens and small molecules. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP1878 Received: 09 March 2017 Revised: 14 August 2017 Accepted: 16 August 2017 Published: 28 September 2017 Address correspondence to M.B.
