Early Results of a Natural Experiment Evaluating the Effects of a Local Minimum Wage Policy on the Diet-Related Health of Low-Wage Workers, 2018-2020
CONCLUSION: There was no evidence of a beneficial or adverse effect of the Minimum Wage Ordinance on health-related variables during a period of economic and social change. How Doctors Inadvertently Fat-Shame Kids
When Beth Nathan was 10 years old, her pediatrician grabbed her belly and said, “OK! Time to switch to skim milk!” Nathan estimates that she weighed “maybe four pounds more” than her friends at school at that point. Until then, she had never thought much about her body. But the doctor’s comment hit its mark. Nathan began thinking about her weight more and went on her first diet in high school. And then, N...

Exploring the associations between neighbourhood food environment, household food insecurity, and child weight-related outcomes in socio-economically and racially/ethnically diverse families
CONCLUSIONS: Poor NFEs were associated with worse weight-related outcomes for children; the association with weight was more pronounced among children with HFI. Interventions aiming to improve child weight-related outcomes should consider both NFE and HFI.PMID:36210770 | DOI:10.1017/S1368980022002130

The objective of this study was to describe food purchasing behaviors and the home food environment across families simultaneously receiving SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and other cash and food assistance benefits, and assess how child dietary intake varied across three distinct categories of assistance (i.e., SNAP and other assistance programs, assistance programs other than SNAP, and not enrolled in any assistance program). This cross-sectional study was conducted with parents of children aged 5-9 years (N = 1033) from low-income and racially and ethnically diverse households, living in Minneapolis an...

The Truth About Common Digestive Health Fears
Everyone experiences digestive problems now and then, and they’re nobody’s idea of a good time. In a survey of nearly 72,000 adults in the U.S., 61% reported having had at least one gastrointestinal (GI) symptom over the previous week, and within that group, 58% said they’d had two or more GI symptoms over the past week, according to a study in a 2018 issue of the American Journal of Gastroenterology. Because symptoms like constipation, heartburn, and abdominal pain are generally vague and often don’t have an obvious cause, those suffering tend to fear the worst. “People get very concerned abo...

Associations between shopper impulsivity and cyclical food purchasing: Results from a prospective trial of low-income households receiving monthly benefits
In this study, 249 low-income households in the Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota, metropolitan area received monthly benefits for three months. Association between hourly wages and dietary intake after the first phase of implementation of the Minneapolis minimum wage ordinance
CONCLUSIONS: The first phase of implementation of the Minneapolis minimum wage policy was associated with increased wages, but not with changes in dietary intake. Future research should examine whether full implementation is associated dietary changes.PMID:33634771 | DOI:10.1017/S1368980021000707
