Why the Adderall Shortage Has Lasted So Long
In October 2022, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a shortage of amphetamine mixed salts—a drug category that includes Adderall, the stimulant medication often used to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In the six months since, little has changed. Numerous amphetamine mixed salts products are still in short supply, although certain manufacturers expect to release additional inventory in April or May, according to an Apr. 10 update to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists’ (ASHP) drug shortage database. Half a year may seem like ample time to get more of a medi...

The new year is the perfect time to re-evaluate these habits, experts say. Here are nine wellness trends you’d be better off ditching in 2023—plus healthier alternatives. Weight-loss shots Ozempic and Wegovy, two weight-loss injections that are used...

Controlling Screen Time for Children with ADHD
Parents are often concerned about their child’s screen time and report difficulty enforcing limits. Screen time includes time with all screens including social media, online gaming, and watching videos. Enforcing limits on screen time can be particularly challenging for children who have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) due to difficulties with self-monitoring and inattention. As a child therapist, parents often tell me that their child grabs their phone out of their purse, asks to use their tablet constantly, and cries when denied. This leads to parents often giving in to such requests, which only encoura...

Does Sugar Make Kids Hyper? That ’ s Largely A Myth
(CNN) — Does sugar make kids hyper? Maybe. “If you look at the peer-reviewed evidence, we cannot say sugar absolutely makes kids hyper; however, you can’t discount that sugar may have a slight effect” on behavior, said Kristi L. King, senior pediatric dietitian at Texas Children’s Hospital and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. In the mid-1990s, a meta-analysis reviewed 16 studies on sugar’s effects in children. The research, published in the medical journal JAMA, concluded that sugar does not affect behavior or cognitive performance in children. “However, a sm...

Flu Vaccines now available. North Aurora office will open shortly!
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), 2017 was the worst flu season since 1976 claiming 80,000 lives of which 180 were children.  Many of the children who succumbed last year were healthy kids with no medical issues. While that may not seem like a lot of kids and we tend to think “it will never happen to me”, the fact is that flu does not discriminate…not by age, not by gender, not by how healthy you are.  In fact, many of the children who succumbed were healthy and had no previous medical issue although the majority had not been vaccinated.Flu shots are now available at all offi...

What We Know About the Effect of Psychotropic Drugs on Migrant Kids
A federal judge on Monday ruled that the government must obtain parental or guardian consent before administering psychotropic drugs—those that can affect the brain or behavior—to migrant children in its care. But plenty of questions still remain about what these drugs do to young brains in the first place. “The benefits or risks of psychotropic medications to brain development are only beginning to be evaluated,” says Dr. Manpreet Singh, director of the Pediatric Mood Disorders Program at Stanford University. “We haven’t actually looked, directly and in systematic ways, at the effects o...

ADHD Study Links Teen ’ s Symptoms With Digital Media Use
(CNN) — The more teens check social media and stream video, the more likely they might develop symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, a new study suggests. The study, published in the medical journal JAMA on Tuesday, sheds light on how more research is needed to determine whether symptoms of the disorder, commonly called ADHD, are possibly caused by digital media use. “If we can determine if there is a potential causal link that is consistent across studies, then we can design interventions to curb media exposure. Even simple educational information to let teachers, parents, and pediatric heal...
