9 Wellness Trends to Ditch in 2023
In 2022, social media inspired many of the ways we tried to get and stay healthy—but not always for the better. Weight-loss drugs spread like wildfire online, as did our collective agreement to stop going the extra mile at work. We turned to Dr. TikTok again and again, and focused perhaps too much on body image—even when we tried to keep things positive. The new year is the perfect time to re-evaluate these habits, experts say. Here are nine wellness trends you’d be better off ditching in 2023—plus healthier alternatives. Weight-loss shots Ozempic and Wegovy, two weight-loss injections that are used...

Psychiatric disorders shouldn't disqualify youth with severe obesity from weight loss surgery
(Children's National Health System) Psychiatric disorders, a common comorbidity of severe obesity, especially for youth, should not disqualify an adolescent with severe obesity from bariatric surgery. According to a forthcoming study in Pediatrics, identifying anxiety, depressive disorders, ADHD, and eating disorders, while still a crucial pre-surgical evaluation step, had no predictive value for how much post-surgical weight loss an adolescent would achieve.

HealthWatch: People With ADHD Losing Sleep; Break From Diet Can Help Weight Loss
BOSTON (CBS) – It’s estimated that up to 11 percent of kids ages 4 to 17 are diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but could your child just be sleep deprived? A recent analysis found that 75 percent of children and adults with ADHD also have disruptions in their biological clocks, causing them to fall asleep later and sleep less. But it is unclear what comes first, if sleeplessness contributes to ADHD or if ADHD causes sleep problems. While more research is needed, experts say there may be a significant number of kids and adults diagnosed with ADHD who could benefit from better sleep....

The Mediterranean Diet Could Help Kids With ADHD
The Mediterranean diet is often celebrated for its health effects on the brain, especially later in life. Doctors recommend it for preventing Alzheimer’s and protecting the brain from aging. Now, research suggests the diet could also be beneficial for the brains of much younger people. A study published Jan. 30 in the journal Pediatrics found that children with “low adherence” to the traditional Mediterranean diet were seven times more likely to have ADHD than children with a strong adherence to the diet. In general, children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder ate more sugar and processed ...

Important Health Stories You May Have Missed
There's never a shortage of health-related headlines. I don't envy the editors of The Week magazine, who have to sift through countless inane weight-loss stories as well as seemingly important new research to determine just the right fit for the magazine's "Health Scare of the Week" column. Like those editors, the public has the arduous responsibility of judiciously deciding what news stories to toss aside and what stories to accept as important. Last week's story said red wine will protect your heart, this week it's toxic, and next week your choice of wine or beer make determine whether you are alive or dead by age 55......

My Bipolar Medications & The DUI
I thought I was an old-fashioned kind of girl when I first got married. I thought I wanted to be the one to take care of my man. I wanted to do the cooking, the cleaning, and all the shopping. I wanted to make his doctor appointments and be a stay-at-home mom. I wanted to do all the things I thought women in the 1950s did. Only I wasn’t living in the 1950s. When I married my husband in 1997, I had just graduated cosmetology school and become a stylist at the most upscale salon in our town. I had become a mother at the young age of 17, and I did not want to marry his biological father because I knew I would never have any...

Why Are So Many College and High School Kids Abusing Adderall
During the past 15 years, there has been a remarkable transformation in the drug trade. It used to be dominated by the illegal drug cartels. Now it it is dominated by the legal drug companies. The most dangerous legal drugs are the prescription opioids, now responsible for twice as many deaths as street drugs and also for a secondary epidemic of heroin addiction. The next most dangerous legal drugs are Xanax and other short acting benzodiazepines that potentiate overdoses, cause severe addiction, raise the risk of falls, and worsen cognitive problems. ADHD meds are the most dangerous legal drugs among young people in co...

Why Target Vaccines?
Anti-vaccination campaigners have reached the forefront of the news. When a public health issue has reached the Jimmy Kimmel show, you know that it has reached the "big time." Seth Mnookin wrote the book The Panic Virus: The True Story of the Vaccine-Autism Controversy. Both Kimmel and Mnookin mentioned Jenny McCarthy, who has been quite vocal about her concerns about vaccines. More measles outbreaks have occurred in the past year than in the past decade, with the majority occurring among unvaccinated children. Buzzfeed asked vaccine expert Kate O'Brien of the International Vaccine Access Center (IVAC) at the Johns Hopkins...

The 5 Biggest Myths About Mental Strength
As a society, we spend a lot of time talking about physical strength. Newsstands are filled with weight lifting and fitness magazines, workout videos generate over $300 million dollars a year, and TV commercials are dominated by the latest fad diets and weight loss supplements. Mental strength has certainly never attracted that much attention. Yet, without mental strength, we aren't likely to reach our physical fitness goals -- or any other goals for that matter. Building mental strength is the key to reaching our full potential in life. Despite the significance of mental strength, many people aren't familiar with the co...

This article is essential reading. (For more on tramadol, click here.) [HT @DavidJuurlink] Carbon Monoxide Toxicity: Over at Academic Life in Emergency Medicine, there is an excellent review of carbon monoxide toxicity by Dr. Dan Repplinger, with expert peer review by Dr. David Juurlink. Dr. Juurlink summation reflects my opinion on the matter exactly: ” . . .there are no absolute indications for HBO on patients with CO poisoning. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.” Another must-read. Liver toxicity and dietary supplements: The New...

Experts argue that ADHD is 'overdiagnosed'
Conclusion This is a well written and argued piece. But it should not be taken as a summary of expert consensus on the current state of thinking about ADHD. Individual views by experts in the field vary widely. Many argue that the increase in prescriptions is not due to overdiagnosis, or drug company lobbying, but is driven by a better understanding of the condition. As with many complex topics, there appear to be no simple answers about the best way to care for people affected by ADHD. If your child, or yourself, is affected by the condition, then your best option is to find out as much as you can about the condition so ...
