The Strategic Petroleum Reserve Was Never Used Strategically
Alan ReynoldsPresident Biden plans to tap the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) for a  million barrels a day for six months, describing this as “awartime bridge to increase oil supply until production ramps up later this year. ”This is only the second time that the SPR has been used for the purpose Congress intended in 1975 – to counteract temporary spikes in the global price of oil due to cartel extortion or foreign wars. The first time was during the Gulf War, on January 16, 1991, when President George H.W. Bush announced the SPR would immediately begin selling up to 2.5 million barrels a day. On the following d...

The Macro View – Health, Economics, and Politics and the Big Picture. What I Am Watching Here And Abroad.
July 14, 2022 Edition-----The biggest news this week was the assassination of the ex-PM of Japan – Shinzo Abe – who was a good friend to OZ incidentally. In the US we have had a wind-up to a busy summit season – NATO etc – and the ongoing war in Ukraine which is becoming a deepening, protracted and horrible situation which it seems hard to resolve sadly. In the UK Boris is out but not gone and the battle for the succession is off and rolling. In OZ we have Albo back and we need to work out what to mitigate these various natural disasters and actually get on with it!!!! The response has been pathetic so far I reckon!--...

Briefing Recap: Barriers To Care For Patients With Complex Health Needs
The 2015 Commonwealth Fund International Health Policy Survey, the 18th annual, gathered information from thousands of primary care physicians in 10 Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries. The results showed that while a majority of respondents feel well prepared to manage the care of patients with complex needs, their ability to provide enhanced access and care management is hindered by significant communication and coordination challenges. The results of the study, which were published in the December 2015 issue of Health Affairs, included these major findings: Doctors’ views of prac...

Is the Encyclopedia of Libertarianism like Wikipedia?
I see that my colleagues arereferring to the new onlineEncyclopedia of Libertarianism as “a Wikipedia for libertarianism.” I suppose that’s sort of true, in that it’s an online encyclopedia. But it’s not exactly Hayekian,as Jimmy Wales describes Wikipedia. That is, it didn ’t emerge spontaneously from the actions of hundreds of thousands of contributors. Instead, editors Ronald Hamowy, Jason Kuznicki, and Aaron Steelman drew up a list of topics and sought the best scholars to write on each one – people like Alan Charles Kors, Bryan Caplan, Deirdre McCloskey, Georg e H. Smith, Israel Kirzner, James Buchanan, J...

Garlic Oil for Ear Infection Pain
In this study of about 100 children, the herbal drops worked as well as the prescription drops. This is great news, except the study is from July 2001 and Otikon Otic Solution is no longer available, or at least not in the United States. From my perspective, eardrops of some type should play a large role in the management of ear infections. My favorite would be to use garlic oil for ear infections, in a potent high-quality extra virgin olive oil as a base. They would include mullein and other key organic and wild foraged herbs. Many ear infections can be safely managed without antibiotics if children are given pain relie...

Breastfeeding, Pumping, and Night vs. Day Milk: Your Questions Answered
Learning to breastfeed your baby can be one of the most challenging and beautiful experiences of being a new parent. Many moms choose to also learn how to pump their breastmilk for times when they can’t be there to nourish their little one, or for other reasons. Here are some new insights I’ve learned and answers to questions that often come up around pumping. When and for how long should I be pumping?  Moms may pump for many reasons: engorgement, sore nipples or problems latching on; babies that are too sick or too premature to nurse; to increase or maintain milk production; to be ready for an occasional ...

Reforming the Organ Donation System
David Kemp andPeter Van DorenThe Washington Postrecently reported on the logistic and technological failings of the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), the private non ‐profit agency with a government ‐enforced monopoly on the United States’ system of procuring organ donations and matching donated organs to the over 100,000 people waiting for them. A report from the White House US Digital Service found that UNOS has been ineffective, lacks transparency, and relies on outdated software, with frequent system failures and cybersecurity concerns. While UNOS has resisted efforts to modernize and refor...
