The Macro View – Health, Economics, and Politics and the Big Picture. What I Am Watching Here And Abroad.
June 09, 2022 Edition-----The Russian war on Ukraine is now well over 100 days old. The destruction and deaths are just awful and the world is being seriously re-shaped. Where this ends is unknowable but unlikely to be good.In the US we are seeing almost daily mass shootings and no-one seems to know what to do. Just pathetic. In the UK the hangover is slowly lifting after the 4 day royal celebration. In OZ we are having an energy crisis which we hope we will find solutions for soon!-----Major Issues.------https://www.theaustralian.com.au/business/economics/australias-labor-government-faces-a-whole-new-economic-ball-game/news...

How much can what we eat help inflammatory bowel disease?
Speaking at the event, Dr Alan Desmond, Consultant Gastroenterologist at South Devon Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, UK, suggested that active Crohn’s Disease (CD) can be successfully reversed by adopting a Whole Food Plant Based Diet (WFPBD). He cited data from two trials which have shown diets like the WFPBD, which restricts animal protein, animal fat, omega-6 PUFAs, dairy, emulsifiers and food additives while providing dietary fibre can bring improvements in people with Crohn’s in just six weeks. Patients in the trials obtained 50% of caloric intake from an enteral formula (an artificial ‘complete nutrition...

Oops. Decreasing iron supplements to every other day.
When iron supplements are given to treat iron deficiency, only a small amount of the iron is actually absorbed (2% to 28% depending on the study). To compensate for this, relatively large doses of iron are given – and the unabsorbed iron left in the gut contributes to the common side effects of taking iron (nausea and constipation). It can also increase inflammation in the gut and negatively affect the microbiome, the balance of beneficial bacteria in the gut. How to solve the problem? A standard recommendation has been to split the dose throughout the day in an attempt to increase the amount of iron actually absorbed a...

New Report Exposes Jones Act ' s Flaws
The objective of “providing shipping service on all r outes essential for maintaining the flow [of commerce] at all times” and having the “safest” types of vessels are similarly unmet, with the CRS stating that “the Jones Act fleet does not appear to achieve either of these goals.” The report adds that “One can also question whether the po licy objective of having ‘the best equipped and most suitable types of vessels’ has been achieved.”The failure of protectionist policy is one of the world ’s more predictable phenomena, and prior to its passage some appeared to foresee its problems and urge a diffe...

Has the Federal Government Preserved U.S. Shipbuilding Vitality? Or Sapped it?
Colin GrabowA recentNew York Timesfeature about the construction of containerships contains the following passage regarding the state of the U.S. shipbuilding industry:In the United States, large shipyards have been on the decline for decades, losing out on orders for massive commercial ships to cheaper foreign competition. Today, more than 90 percent of global shipbuilding takes place in just three countries: China, South Korea and Japan. What industry does remain in the United States is supported by the federal government, which orders American ‐made ships of all kinds, from Coast Guard cutters to naval aircraft car...

Oops. Decreasing iron supplements to every other day.
For years the standard way to give iron supplements was one dose a day. But when iron supplements are given to treat iron deficiency, only a small amount of the iron is actually absorbed — 2% to 28% depending on the circumstances and the study. This means if someone were to take a 25mg iron supplement at best only 7.5mg would be absorbed. Perhaps far less. The rest remains in the gut. In order to compensate for poor absorption, relatively large doses of iron are given – and the unabsorbed iron left in the gut contributes to the common side effects of taking iron (nausea and constipation). It can also increase infla...

Mom ’s Diet while Breastfeeding
Mom’s diet while breastfeeding can change the composition of her breast milk. It’s no wonder nursing mothers have questions about what they should and shouldn’t eat. Here’s a quick overview of the most commonly asked questions about mom’s diet while breastfeeding. How Many Calories Do Mom’s Need while Breastfeeding? One rule of thumb is to take in about (15 x your current weight) + 500 calories a day. So for a woman who weighs 125 pounds, this would be about 2375 calories a day. But this is just a rule of thumb. Choosing healthy foods, following your appetite, and paying attention to you...

July 28, 2022 Edition-----Sadly the war drags on, Biden seems to be pretty impotent on most policy fronts and the US seems to be heading into a recession. Not good,In the UK the choosing the next PM is off and running as the country and Europe are cooling down after a heatwave (for them) of biblical proportions! In OZ Parliament is meeting which is when the rubber will really hit the road as a new virus wave runs out of control still!
