The Top 10 Health Chatbots
This study from March 2023 reports how an app developed to help patients’ bowel preparation can increase compliance and thus, the number of successful colonoscopies. In some cases, health chatbots are also able to connect patients with clinicians for diagnosis or treatment, but that is one step further down the line. The general idea is that in the future, these talking or texting smart algorithms might become the first contact point for primary care. Patients will not get in touch with physicians or nurses or any medical professional with every one of their health questions but will turn to chatbots first. If th...

Consciously Exploring Your Relationship with Drugs
Humanity has a complex, long-term relationship with a wide variety of drugs. In this article let’s delve into your personal relationship with drugs, how you frame them, and how you might upgrade these relationships to be more conscious and aligned with your path of self-development. Let’s include common drug sources like coffee, tea, and chocolate too, so this will be very inclusive. My purpose here isn’t to encourage or discourage you from using any particular substances but rather to invite you to take a more conscious and honest look at your current frames, attitudes, biases, and behaviors, and dete...

How Alcohol Affects Blood Pressure: A Detailed Insight
Conclusion In this guide, we’ve explored the complex relationship between alcohol and blood pressure. We’ve seen that alcohol, whether consumed moderately, heavily, or in a binge pattern, can impact blood pressure. We also delved into the biological mechanisms at play, the role of various drinking patterns, and the sobering revelations of recent research. While the pleasure of a drink might be fleeting, its effects on our body, particularly on our blood pressure, can be long-lasting. The key takeaway? Moderation. Even a small reduction in alcohol intake can have significant health benefits, partic...

Psychedelic Science 2023 – Full Conference Review
In June I attended the Psychedelic Science 2023 conference at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver. We were told this was the largest psychedelic-related gathering in the history of the planet, attracting about 12,000 attendees and 500 speakers. In this post I’ll share about my experiences and insights from the conference. Here’s a pic from inside the Bellco Theater where the main keynotes were held. The Colorado Convention Center is sizable, and sessions were spread across many different rooms. Even though I didn’t do extra exercise on this trip, I was typically hitting about 1000 calories ...

In this study, we investigated the effect of NXP032 on neurovascular stabilization through the changes of PECAM-1, PDGFR-β, ZO-1, laminin, and glial cells involved in maintaining the integrity of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in aged mice. NXP032 was orally administered daily for 8 weeks. Compared to young mice and NXP032-treated mice, 20-month-old mice displayed cognitive impairments in Y-maze and passive avoidance tests. NXP032 treatment contributed to reducing the BBB damage by attenuating the fragmentation of microvessels and reducing PDGFR-β, ZO-1, and laminin expression, thereby mitigating astrocytes and microglia ...

The Gut Microbiome Differs in Characteristic Ways in Patients with Precancerous Colon Polyps
The gut microbiome changes with age, the relative abundance of microbial populations shifting in ways that appear connected to chronic inflammation and dysfunction of the intestinal epithelium and intestinal barrier function. Cancer of the colon is an important cause of human mortality, and there is some hope that finding ways to prevent or reverse gut microbiome aging, such as via fecal microbiota transplant from young individuals, will go some way to minimizing colon cancer incidence. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the U.S., and rates of colorectal cancer are rising amon...

In this study, we used a Drosophila model to understand the role of the dec2P384R mutation on animal health and elucidate the mechanisms driving these physiological changes. We found that the expression of the mammalian dec2P384R transgene in fly sleep neurons was sufficient to mimic the short sleep phenotype observed in mammals. Remarkably, dec2P384Rmutants lived significantly longer with improved health despite sleeping less. In particular, dec2P384R mutants were more stress resistant and displayed improved mitochondrial fitness in flight muscles. Differential gene expression analyses went on to reveal several altered tr...

Cellular Senescence in Skin as an Early Sign of Aging
We reported that skin inherently possesses mechanisms to remove senescent cells. In the epidermis, this is achieved by the binding of JAG1, a Notch ligand expressed on adjacent non-senescent keratinocytes, to Notch1 receptors expressed by senescent keratinocytes, which promotes the exclusion of senescent cells from the basal layer by inducing differentiation. Meanwhile, in the dermis, senescent cells are phagocytosed by macrophages through recognition by the phosphatidyl serine (PS) receptor STAB1. However, since ageing is associated with the accumulation of senescent cells in skin tissue, it is hypothesized that this accu...

Why poor diets are contributing to a surge in colorectal cancer cases among young people
An alarming trend has emerged in my medical practice in recent years: I’m seeing more and more young adults with colorectal cancer. When I began practicing as a family physician 21 years ago, I never saw patients in their 40s and 50s with the disease, much less ones in their 30s. Now, I diagnose two Read more… Why poor diets are contributing to a surge in colorectal cancer cases among young people originally appeared in KevinMD.com.

Changing the pediatric care landscape: Integrating behavioral and mental health care
One in five children and adolescents will receive a behavioral or mental health diagnosis by 18. That is more than the number of women diagnosed with breast cancer (1 in 8). According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, 50 percent of pediatric office visits involve behavioral, social-emotional, or developmental concerns. Seventy percent Read more… Changing the pediatric care landscape: Integrating behavioral and mental health care originally appeared in KevinMD.com.

Idaho Public Television and State Health Officials Lie to the Public by Telling them Smoking is Not More Harmful than Vaping
In a public education campaign entitled " Do You Know Vape? " Idaho Public Television in collaboration with the state health districts isinforming the public that: " Vaping isnot safer than cigarette smoking. "The campaign is also making several other alarming claims, including that:vaping causes brain, bone, and lung injury to young people;third-hand aerosol from vaping (i.e., particles that stick to surfaces) can cause "asthma, respiratory illness, increased risk of disease, headaches andincreased risk of cancer" ; and vaping exposes users tometals in the lungs that can cause lung cancer. The Rest of the StoryRather t...

Conclusions Implanted Hair Follicle Cells Produce Remodeling of Scar Tissue Assessment of Somatic Mosaicism as a Biomarker of Aging The Gut Microbiome of Centenarians https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2023/01/the-gut-microbiome-of-centenarians/ The state of the gut microbiome is arguably as influential on health as exercise. Various microbial species present in the gut produce beneficial metabolites, such as butyrate, or harmful metabolites, such as isoamylamine, or can provoke chronic inflammation in a variety of ways. An individual can have a better or worse microbiome, assessing these and other fu...

In conclusion, the PAAIs examined (i.e. mTOR loss of function, Ghrhr loss of function, intermittent fasting-based version of dietary restriction) often influenced age-sensitive traits in a direct way and not by slowing age-dependent change. Previous studies often failed to include young animals subjected to PAAI to account for age-independent PAAI effects. However, any study not accounting for such age-independent intervention effects will be prone to overestimate the extent to which an intervention delays the effects of aging on the phenotypes studied. This can result in a considerable bias of our view on how modifiable a...
