Cancer treatment can mess with your brain
In this study, 189 women who had been recently diagnosed and had just finished their chemotherapy, were interviewed and tested. About one in five of these women complained about their memory and ability to organize and plan (called “executive function”). In general those women who complained of memory problems showed deficiencies on memory tests. Cancer screening is of little benefit in persons with dementia but can cause very serious harms.   Older persons with dementia have limited life expectancies which makes any benefit from cancer screening very unlikely.  This is because cancer screening works by identifying a cancer many years (generally at least 5-10 years) before it would threaten health. In this study, we show that calorie restriction is protective against age-related increases in senescence and microglia activation and pro-inflammatory cytokine expression in an animal model of aging.
