Richard Davies deBronkart Jr , known by many as e-Patient Dave, is a cancer patient and blogger who, in 2009, became a noted activist for health care transformation through participatory medicine and personal health data rights. In 2010, he became a published author and Disruptive Women in Health Care’s August Man of the Month.

My research scientist grandmother used to respond to my complaints of being “stressed out” by asking, “What’s stress? Just a force that holds up a bridge.”
On that one count, I’m afraid she was wrong. Contemporary research points increasingly to the significant negative effects of stress on our physical health, and its role in fueling chronic health problems and autoimmune disorders. Quite Simply: UNACCEPTABLE
Last week, my mom stunned me with bad news: A young woman named Tiffany Costa died. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002 and died two weeks ago from stage II breast cancer at just 29 years old. She was metastatic for many years.

Oncologists are on board in the fight against obesity. And they’ve made it official by issuing their first-ever Position Statement on Obesity and Cancer through the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).

Fierce Urgency of Now: Family Caregivers and the Future That Is Upon Us
Just before Mother’s Day, I was a guest on an Al-Jazeera news segment focused on the challenges of aging in America. It was my first-ever news appearance, and, later, I proudly showed a recording to my adult daughters when they came by to visit. The time is now: Addressing health inequities in rural minority populations
In 1966 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave a speech to the Medical Committee for Human Rights and said “of all the forms of inequality, injustice in healthcare is the most shocking and inhumane.” In 2017 inequality in healthcare still exists and the consequences are striking.

Saving a life through health IT
I recently watched Jimmy Kimmel share a personal story about his new son on live television. His son, Billy Kimmel, was born with an undetected heart defect that required immediate surgery. Because of the great healthcare his son received, Billy lives to see his future. While my heart ached as I listened to Jimmy’s emotional message, I was overcome with appreciation for all the work medical professionals do within healthcare.

On Becoming a (Positively) Disruptive Woman, and Passing It on to Others

Heart disease claims the lives of more women than any other illness — more than all types of cancer combined — so let’s set straight the myth that heart disease is a man’s disease. While an estimated 80 percent of heart disease is preventable, cardiovascular disease among women remains an invisible disease in the national conversation. Some Things are Better Left Unsaid
It’s been on the news, but thankfully not too much. The US Preventive Health Services Task Force just issued a statement saying there was “no evidence of value for celiac disease screening.”
Taken out of context, without a careful reading of the statement, an understanding of the distinction between “screening,” “diagnosis,” and “case finding,” without sufficient background about the role of the Task Force, and in the midst of today’s controversies about “going gluten free,” this statement might easily lead to misinterpretation by patients, families, clinicians and insurers.
