Investigating the Secrets of Cancer-Causing Viruses

While she was in graduate school, Mandy Muller, Ph.D., became intrigued with viruses that are oncogenic, meaning they can cause cancer. At the time, she was researching human papillomaviruses (HPVs), which can lead to cervical and throat cancer, among other types. Now, as an assistant professor of microbiology at the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Amherst, Dr. Muller studies Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), which causes the rare AIDS-associated cancer Kaposi sarcoma.

This study explored the association between different cooking fuel types and the risk of cancer and all-cause mortality among seniors constructing Cox regression models. Data were obtained by linking waves of 6, 7, and 8 of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, which included a total of 7,269 participants who were 65 years old and over. Cooking fuels were categorized as either biomass, fossil, or clean fuels. And the effects of switching cooking fuels on death risk were also investigated using Cox regression models.

A View of Cellular Senescence in Cancer
Cellular senescence is a double-edged sword in the matter of cancer. A cancer cell turned senescent, and thus entered a state of growth arrest, is not a cancer cell that continues to replicate. It secretes pro-growth, pro-inflammatory signals that draw the attention of the immune system. This can be beneficial, helping to defeat a cancer, particularly in the early stages. In conclusion, our results suggest that SAH extends lifespan by inducing MetR or mimicking its downstream effects. Since the lifespan-extending effects of SAH are conserved in yeast and nematodes, and MetR extends the lifespan of many species, exposure to SAH is expected to have multiple benefits across evolutionary boundaries.
