The Young Adult Ignored Cancer Patients
This is one of my pet peeves. Children with cancer have their mature, sane parents advocating for them. Adults with cancer can advocate for themselves. The young adults - 15 to 30s - often don ' t find the same support or resources. First they are still trying to figure out who they are and what they will do with their life. Second, they are learning to be independent and should be focusing on their education and careers, not going to chemotherapy. There is hope now that online resources can help fill the gaps for the patients and maybe for the doctors as well." In addition, they will probably go on to live long lives and t...

Survivor Advocate Program Shapes Future Research
The 8th Biennial on Cancer Survivorship Research took place last week and I can’t think of a more meaningful or impactful way for us to have kicked off this meeting than by convening a group of engaged survivor advocates! This is just what LIVESTRONG accomplished, in partnership and collaboration with the American Cancer Society, the National Cancer Institute and the Centers for Disease Control. Earlier this year survivor advocates from across the country applied to the Survivor Advocate program, held in concert with the Biennial. The response was overwhelming and after a rigorous review of almost 150 applications, 15 in...

Doubling lung cancer survival rates in nine years
Lung cancer is sometimes referred to as the “invisible” cancer. Its impact is not often discussed; but it is often felt. The disease takes more American lives each year than breast, colon, and prostate cancers combined. One in 16 women will develop lung cancer in her lifetime, and anyone can get it. I decided to raise awareness for lung cancer when it became obvious to me, as a young physician and researcher, that if I didn’t do it, no one else would. As an oncologist and lung cancer researcher, I saw firsthand the toll the disease takes, and I am also witness to the impact that a lack of adequate research funding ha...

A New Way to Support Cancer Education in Schools
At Hotels for Hope, we are honored to not only call LIVESTRONG a nonprofit partner…but also our friends. LIVESTRONG provides crucial support and services for those affected by cancer. This year, Hotels for Hope is excited to team up in an effort to fundraise for the LIVESTRONG at School program. Research has shown that 25 percent of cancer survivors in the United States have school-aged children. Cancer is difficult enough to understand as an adult. But imagine being a child and learning that your parent, family member, friend or teacher was diagnosed with cancer. It’s crucial that teachers are able to offer cancer...

Precision Medicine Is Our Best Hope In The Fight Against Cancer
In the fight against cancer, precision medicine is one of the most promising tools and the logical outcome of current healthcare trends. As start-ups offering personalized healthcare solutions multiply like mushrooms after rain, governments and regulatory agencies have to give appropriate responses in regulating the grass-root healthcare jungle. Here is my analysis about the potential and dilemmas about precision medicine. Precision medicine is the logical outcome of modern healthcare There is one phrase, which is not part of the Hippocratic Oath, but everyone in medicine knows it. Primum non nocere, meaning “first do n...

Building Sustainable Partnerships To Improve Access To Breast Cancer Treatment For Uninsured Women
Breast cancer is a terrifying disease for most women. In the United States, it is the leading cause of cancer deaths among women ages twenty to fifty-nine years. More than 5,100 women are diagnosed with—and at least 1,100 women die from—breast cancer in New York City each year. The breast cancer survival rate is also lower for uninsured women than for those with private health insurance coverage. Although access to affordable breast cancer screening and treatment has grown substantially over the past few years as a result of increased health insurance coverage options through the Affordable Care Act (ACA), many uninsur...

Sex is Different after a Mastectomy
There is something wonderful about having breasts. Not just how they look, but how they feel when they are yours. The brush of your partner’s skin against them when you are intimate is exhilarating and not only enhances the sexual experience, but often is a main contributor to the pleasure of sex for many women. For a lot of women, losing a breast through a mastectomy truly reduces the sexual experience. When I was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer to be honest, sex didn’t even cross my mind. It wasn’t until after the mastectomy that the realization of how far breast cancer impacted my life became apparent.  ...

What It Means to Be Your Own Patient Advocate
I learned what it means to be a patient advocate many years ago, when my dad was sick. We knew something was terribly wrong with this tall, strapping man when he started to lose weight and was continually fatigued. Our frustration grew as each time he went to the doctor, he came home with instructions to quit smoking. Fighting for My Father Patient advocacy often means working around the doctor, so I found a clinic in Toronto that would perform every test known to man to determine my dad’s illness. Thanks to the Canadian healthcare system, it wasn’t going to cost my dad anything. We quickly learned that he had non-Ho...

A Powerful LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Experience
Earlier this week I visited the Floyd County YMCA with my LIVESTRONG teammate Polly Jenkins and our partners at Eli Lily to see a YMCA program in action and to discuss our partnership. I have always heard great things about the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program, but I left this site visit with a whole new and fresh perspective.  In short, I was blown away. I wish I could have videoed this whole experience, or even better, brought you all with me. One thing is for sure – LIVESTRONG at the YMCA isn’t just an exercise program – it is helping people return to LIFE after cancer.  It’s just as much about the rebuildin...
