Parts of SpeechWhat kind of word is love?Is it a noun, something we point To like a tree or a bird,The first cresting of a winter sunrise?Or is it just a sterile abstractionSumming mysteries we couldn ’t describe otherwise? There are those who say love is actionThat it must be understood as a verb.Holding your hand in the darkLashing you with wet spaghetti When you ’re trying to stir the sauce A glass of bourbon waiting for when you get homeAfter the boss forgot to give you a break. It ’s showing up, every single day. Bringing you coffeeFlowers at work Belting out Sweet Carolinein the sho...

They ' ve Gone Coup-Coup
Science confirms consistent neurophysiological and psychological differences between conservatives and liberals. How they react to threats. Their reliance on the observable and their response to presented facts. Evolutionary biologists have theories, but it ’s intuitive that, in addition to rationalists, primitive societies benefitted from people who don’t need no damn proof to react to perceived threats. Noises. Shadows. Gut feelings. It could avoid becoming a meal.Who knows why such brains remain in circulation? Individuals are safer now. More often than not, there ’s time to think, evaluate. Threats from saber-too...

“ Dr. ” Raphael Nyarkotey Obu: Another example showing quackery ’ s the same all over the world
Orac has Google Alerts set up for various subjects, such as alternative medicine. This time around, it was a Google Alert that introduced him to "Dr." Raphael Nyarkotey Obu, who shows how quackery is the same all over the world, including in Ghana. Helen Lawson and black salve: Cutting, burning, and poisoning “ naturally ”
Cancer quacks frequently characterize conventional treatments for cancer as "cutting, poisoning, and burning." Yet, in Australia a woman with ovarian cancer chose black salve, in essence, "cutting, poisoning, and burning" (but mostly burning and without the cutting) to treat her disease. She died a horrible death. How can black salve still be a thing. The post Helen Lawson and black salve: Cutting, burning, and poisoning “naturally” appeared first on RESPECTFUL INSOLENCE.

Orac basks in the adoration of Gary Null (revised and greatly expanded)
Orac loves to bask in the adulation of his "fans." This time around, one of the old men of quackery, Gary Null, has decided that he really, really doesn't like science-based medicine. Orac was sufficiently amused to revise, update, and expand his previous post providing Null with some not-so-Respectful Insolence. Melania Trump Kidney Surgery
Although the editors of InsideSurgery.com are not participating in Melania Trump’s care, we have noted with interest news reports that she received a “kidney surgery” today at Walter Reed Hospital. She reportedly received an embolization for a “benign” condition and will be hospitalized through the end of the week. Some thoughts on this development: Embolizations are most commonly done through one of the main femoral or groin arteries and it does not require a large incision. Typically a large bore needle with a sheath is placed into the artery by an interventional radiologist and then under f...

How is it that in 2018 cancer Stanislaw Burzynski is still preying on desperate cancer patients? (Update)
Earlier this week, I wrote about the tragic story of Demi Knight, and 11-year-old girl in the UK with medulloblastoma with only a few months to live. I wondered how cancer quack Stanislaw Burzynski could still be taking advantage of such patients in 2018. Here, I note the role of the press. How is it that in 2018 cancer quack Stanislaw Burzynski is still preying on desperate cancer patients?
In the 1970s, young polish expat and cancer researcher Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski thought he had found a cure for many incurable cancers. He dubbed it antineoplastons (ANPs_. Unfortunately, he left the path of science and started treating patients before he had evidence that ANPs work. Four decades later, without ever having published compelling evidence for anticancer efficacy of ANPs, he's still luring desperate patients to his clinic. Now he's set to branch out to quack clinics in Mexico. Why can't the law stop him? The post How is it that in 2018 cancer quack Stanislaw Burzynski is still preying on desperate cancer patien...

The quackademic avalanche: Is it too late for the pebbles to vote?
I’ve documented the infiltration of quackery into academic medicine through the “integration” of mystical and prescientific treatment modalities into medicine. Here, I look at a seemingly small incident, a veritable pebble in the quackademic avalanche. Is it too late for the pebbles to vote? The dubious cancer “ virotherapy ” Rigvir returns with an equally dubious case report
Rigvir is a "virotherapy" from Latvia promoted by the International Virotherapy Center and, increasingly, by alternative cancer clinics. There is no convincing scientific evidence for its efficacy. That didn't stop its advocates from presenting a case report. Not surprisingly, the case report isn't convincing either. The post The dubious cancer “virotherapy” Rigvir returns with an equally dubious case report appeared first on RESPECTFUL INSOLENCE.
