I am the first to say (quite loudly at times) that pain is a whole person experience. I say this because my experience of pain is mine and utterly unable to be shared in all its complexity. The only way other people know about my pain is through my actions – both involuntary and voluntary. And even then: the way I express myself differs depending on my social context, my mood, my goals, and what I think my pain represents. Yet when I’m asleep, I don’t have pain, when I have anaesthetic for my colonoscopy, I don’t have pain – so what goes on in my brain is kinda important.

On January 1, 2020, recreational cannabis use became legal in Illinois. More than 80,000 people in Illinois are registered in the state’s medical cannabis program. Surprisingly, many of their doctors don’t know how to talk with them about their medical cannabis use.
As a health sciences researcher, I have a recommendation that is both practical and profound: Physicians can learn first-hand from their own patients how and why they use medical cannabis, and the legalization of recreational cannabis may make them more comfortable discussing its usage overall.

It’s described as a conference primarily for professionals, but non-healthcare professionals also attend. There will be information on complementary and alternative medicine, effectiveness of integrative treatment such as nutrition, sleep and spiritual counseling, in addition to conventional treatments.
The conference is hosted by the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine.
