Nice timing: Our paper on the Darwin's Finch genome is out today on Darwin's birthday
Birthday party for Darwin in 2009 Well, I assume this was on purpose from the folks at Biomed Central but not sure.  Our paper on the genome of one of Darwin's Finches is out today in BMC Genomics: BMC Genomics | Abstract | Insights into the evolution of Darwin's finches from comparative analysis of the Geospiza magnirostris genome sequence. There is a long long long story behind this paper.  Too long for me to write up right now.  I wrote up some of the story for a Figshare posting of the genome data last year. “Darwin’s Finches” are a model system for the study of various aspects of evolut...

Using mouthrinse reduces plaque and gingivitis more than toothbrushing alone
New research published in the January/February 2013 issue of General Dentistry, the peer-reviewed clinical journal of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), indicates that the use of a germ-killing mouthrinse in addition to regular toothbrushing can significantly reduce plaque and gingivitis, more so than brushing alone. "It's simple—mouthrinses can reach nearly 100 percent of the mouth's surfaces, while brushing focuses on the teeth, which make up only 25 percent of the mouth," says Christine A. Charles, RDH, BS, lead author of the study and director of Scientific and Professional Affairs, Global Consumer Healthcare Re...

EMR Research, EMR Blogging, and EMR Whitepapers
#his2013 Overhage: EMR deployment success is also creating a problem as we deploy Commerial products – more difficult to experiment/research — Ross D. Martin (@RossMartin) April 26, 2013 This is an interesting observation. I see what Ross means when it comes to experimentation. Meaningful use and the rest of the government regulations are sucking the innovation out of healthcare IT and EMR in particular. However, from a research stand point, EMR can open up a whole new section of research. Maybe Ross was referring to research on the best way to do EMR. Agree! cc @intelhealthit RT @peggylou74 Lots of good EMR b...

Options? Subprime wasn't enough for you?
Do you have the same reaction as I when you read this New York Times article?  Excerpts:Some of the brokerage firms that helped pique Americans' interest in stocks are now luring them into something much riskier: stock options. As the stock market soars to new heights, E*Trade, Ameritrade and Charles Schwab are advertising the potential rewards of options, which give buyers the right to buy or sell stocks at predetermined prices in the future. Options, like their cousins, futures, have traditionally been the domain of Wall Street traders. But the brokerage firms say futures and options can be profitable for ordin...

The Mystery of the Northwestern Settlement - the Plot Thickens
This article includes even more curiosities that raise even more questions.Dr Bennett Found Irregularities, Sangoleye Pleaded Guilty, Nobody Noticed In the original media coverage, Dr Bennett was accused based on complaints by a whistle blower.  For example, in an article in the Chicago Sun-Times, A whistleblower suit filed under seal in 2009 by former Lurie Cancer Center worker Melissa Theis first alleged the wrongdoing by Bennett. However, the story in the Cancer Letter suggests Dr Bennett had tried to blow the whistle himself.  First,Bennett said the allegations that he spent NCI money on dinners and vaca...

Focus on for new Rx class for inflamed disorders discovered
Research led by Charles Nichols, PhD, Associate Professor of Pharmacology at LSU Health Sciences Middle New Orleans, describes a powerful new anti-inflammatory mechanism that could lead to the introduction of new oral medications for atherosclerosis and inflammatory bowel disorders (IBS). The findings are published in PLOS ONE . Among the master inflammatory molecules in the body is usually Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-alpha). Bacterial infections and certain diseases lead to the production of this molecule, which then stimulates an immune response. Diseases like atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and IBS are ...

Reading Iraqi Newspaper (22 Oct 2013)
Well, I got to admit that now that I am writing this I still don’t know who is Charles Theron, and I don’t know if Hogu Chavez had died or not and if so, when that did happen. The article by Nazzar Abdul-Sattar entitled “Are You Okay?” in today’s issue of Al-Sabah talks about a couple, a female lying watching T.V. and a man who when brought her a glass of orange juice found her contemplating Charles Theron’s face appearing on the screen. They talked about Oscar prices. She told himthat acting is difficult and he told her that asking questions is difficult too. She told him that Hugo Chafez had died just before ...

Glaxo Unit And Former CEO Win Lawsuit Over Alleged Fraud
A federal jury in Miami last week decided that Stiefel Laboratories and its former ceo, Charles Stiefel, did not commit securities fraud in connection with the sale of company stock prior to the $2.9 billion purchase of the family-owned business by GlaxoSmithKline in 2009 (here is the jury verdict form). The lawsuit, which was filed by former Stiefel cfo Richard Fried, was one of several in which former employees alleged that Stiefel stock was deliberately undervalued as part of a buyback through an employee stock plan prior to the sale to Glaxo (here is his lawsuit). As a result, the lawsuits claimed their holdings suffer...

Physician Payment Sunshine Act: Bipartisan Congressional Letter Calls for Exemption of Textbooks and Reprints
23 members of the United States House of Representatives sent a letter to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to voice their disagreement with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) decision to include textbooks and scientifically peer-reviewed medical journals as "transfers of value" reportable under the Physician Payment Sunshine Act. As reported by the Coalition for Healthcare Communication, the letter demonstrates that there is widespread disagreement with the current HHS policy. The signatories state: "The importance of up-to-date, peer-reviewed scientific medical information as the fou...

The CareFusion/ Dr Denham/ NQF /Leapfrog Goup Case that Would Not Go Away - NQF CEO Outed as Member of Premier Inc Board
The story of the CareFusion/ Dr Denham/ NQF/ Leapfrog Group case refuses to go away, even if it still has not created any echoes in the mainstream media or the medical and health care literature.  Now it appears that the NQF has an even bigger conflict of interest problem than previously reported.  BackgroundAs of our last post on 5 February, 2014, the background was--  The case became public with an apparently routine legal settlement between CareFusion and the US Department of Justice -  The CareFusion settlement for $40.1 million was made in response to allegations that kickbacks were made to pr...
