Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) - State of the Art in Diagnostics and Therapy
Z Orthop Unfall. 2023 Jun;161(3):337-352. doi: 10.1055/a-1898-2454. Epub 2023 Jun 12.ABSTRACTThe complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) usually occurs within a few weeks in 2-5% of all patients after trauma or surgery or subsequent measures of the distal extremities. There are certain risk factors for its occurrence but no "CRPS personality", instead there are factors that negatively influence the course. The prognosis is generally good ("rule of thirds"), but remaining limitations are common. The diagnosis is clinically possible according to the "Budapest criteria". Additional examinations are possible in case of doubt but...

Incidence and risk factors for complex regional pain syndrome in radius fractures: meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: The incidence of CRPS in radius fractures was 13.63%. Fractures with greater complexity or greater associated tissue damage, female sex, high BMI, and psychiatric disorders were risk factors for the development of CRPS.LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Meta-analysis of cohort and case series studies; II.PMID:37209231 | DOI:10.1007/s00402-023-04909-8

Being better than well at the University of Birmingham
Ongoing recovery from addiction often happens outside of formal “treatment” settings. Collegiate recovery programs (CRPs) have existed in higher education institutions in the United States since the 1980s as part of vital “recovery ready ecosystems” (Ashford et al., 2020) for those with educational aspirations. Aspiration often begins with inspiration an d Europeans are now beginning their own journeys with CRPs. In this narrative piece, I use my own lived experience of addiction and recovery through a life course that highlights mechanisms of change that are entwined with academia.

What do I need to know? Essential educational concepts for complex regional pain syndrome
ConclusionForty-eight concepts were jointly considered ‘very important’ for future CRPS-related educational content. Future research to better understand group differences and to canvas a broader HCP group is warranted.

Canadian surveillance study of complex regional pain syndrome in children
This study describes the minimum incidence of pediatric complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), clinical features, and treatments recommended by pediatricians and pain clinics in Canada. Participants in the Canadian Paediatric Surveillance Program reported new cases of CRPS aged 2 to 18 years monthly and completed a detailed case reporting questionnaire from September 2017 to August 2019. Descriptive analysis was completed, and the annual incidence of CRPS by sex and age groupings was estimated. A total of 198 cases were reported to the Canadian Paediatric Surveillance Program, and 168 (84.8%) met the case definition. The m...

Prenatal exposure to a mixture of organochlorines and metals and internalizing symptoms in childhood and adolescence
DISCUSSION: Low-level prenatal lead exposure was positively associated with adolescent anxiety symptoms, and prenatal manganese exposure was positively associated with internalizing symptoms for girls from mid-childhood through adolescence. In utero neurotoxicant metal exposures may contribute to the emergence of anxiety and depression.PMID:35016863 | DOI:10.1016/j.envres.2022.112701

Deep-TMS for Chronic Non-Cancer Pain Syndromes including CRPS
Background: Annually, 20% of US adults will suffer chronic pain(CP) for more than six months, 8% to a degree that limits their life and work activities. CP results from a combination of biological, psychological and social factors and requires a multifactorial approach to manage. The evaluation and management of CP syndromes follows the biopsychosocial approach, attempting to identify the cause and type of pain syndrome. Treatment begins with patient education, which includes setting patient expectations and initiating non-pharmacological interventions.

Variation in Canalith Repositioning Procedure Use Among Medicare Beneficiaries: Understanding the Role of Geographic Region and Provider Specialty
Conclusions: CRP utilization increased substantially suggesting improved dissemination and implementation of BPPV management guidelines. Nevertheless, wide geographic and provider-level variation remained, signifying non-uniform provider practices and access to care. Care for BPPV may thus be improved through education and incentivization of a broader range of providers.
