What do classroom teachers of varying backgrounds know about English spelling?
Ann Dyslexia. 2023 Jul 7. doi: 10.1007/s11881-023-00286-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe ability to encode (spell) is an integral writing skill needed to communicate effectively. The ability to spell, also, enhances decoding as spelling and decoding are reciprocal skills that rely on knowledge of the same subskills. Spelling can also be particularly difficult for students with literacy and phonological-processing difficulties such as dyslexia. Because of the multiple benefits of knowing how to spell correctly, it is important for teachers to know the structure of the English language, so they can explicitly teach spell...

Examining fidelity reporting within studies of foundational reading interventions for elementary students with or at risk for dyslexia
Ann Dyslexia. 2023 Jan 26. doi: 10.1007/s11881-023-00279-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEarly access to evidence-based reading intervention improves outcomes for students with or at risk for reading difficulties. Additionally, teacher implementation of reading interventions plays a key role in the efficacy of reading interventions. Previous research suggests the influence of intervention implementation fidelity on student language and literacy outcomes is more significant for lower-performing students and students with disabilities, such as dyslexia. However, recent syntheses have suggested that less than half of reading...

IJERPH, Vol. 20, Pages 1653: Understanding Mental Health in Developmental Dyslexia: A Scoping Review
rk Boyes Children with dyslexia are at elevated risk of internalising and externalising mental health concerns. Our aim was to scope the extent and nature of the literature investigating factors which may influence this association. We systematically searched the peer-reviewed and grey literature with no restrictions on the date. We included both qualitative and quantitative studies. Inclusion criteria included: (1) a focus on childhood (≤18 years) reading/learning difficulties; (2) internalising and/or externalising symptoms; and (3) a potentially modifiable third factor (e.g., self-esteem). Ninety-eight st...

Dyslexic students' experiences in using assistive technology to support written language skills: a five-year follow-up
CONCLUSIONS: This study can contribute to the development of AT academic practices enriched by users' views. The findings reveal factors enabling or hindering students' continued AT usage. Contextual factors in schools concern organisational elements rather than AT accessibility. Students' emotional responses (using AT in the classroom) are influenced by dyslexia self-acceptance and AT attitudes. Students' understanding of how and why to use AT may limit the development of meaningful strategies. Implications and suggested further research are provided to improve dyslexic students' AT experiences and success in school.IMPLI...

Perceived negative consequences of dyslexia: the influence of person and environmental factors
Ann Dyslexia. 2022 Nov 30. doi: 10.1007/s11881-022-00274-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPerceived negative consequences of dyslexia entail the degree to which an individual perceives negative outcomes, such as low academic achievement or feelings of anxiety and depression, and attributes these experiences to the disorder. In the current study, we examined how perceived consequences of dyslexia are influenced by person and environmental factors. Perceived consequences were evaluated for the academic domain and the domain of mental health (depression, anxiety). Participants were 123 Dutch students with dyslexia. Cognitive ...
