Addressing the Mental Health Crisis: Why Personalized Digital Solutions Are Essential To Meet Growing Demand
The following is a guest article by Byron Crowe, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Solera Demand for mental services has never been higher, and an ongoing shortage of psychiatrists and psychologists is preventing millions of Americans from timely access to mental health services. And the timing couldn’t be worse — findings from Solera Health’s recent Mental Health Index, a nationally representative survey of over 3,000 U.S. adults, found that 42% of Americans continue to be bothered by symptoms of anxiety and depression, a staggering figure that remains substantially elevated from pre-pandemic numbers. Moreover, these sym...

Psychedelic Science 2023 – Full Conference Review
In June I attended the Psychedelic Science 2023 conference at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver. We were told this was the largest psychedelic-related gathering in the history of the planet, attracting about 12,000 attendees and 500 speakers. In this post I’ll share about my experiences and insights from the conference. Here’s a pic from inside the Bellco Theater where the main keynotes were held. The Colorado Convention Center is sizable, and sessions were spread across many different rooms. Even though I didn’t do extra exercise on this trip, I was typically hitting about 1000 calories ...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, May 29th 2023
In this study, we used a Drosophila model to understand the role of the dec2P384R mutation on animal health and elucidate the mechanisms driving these physiological changes. We found that the expression of the mammalian dec2P384R transgene in fly sleep neurons was sufficient to mimic the short sleep phenotype observed in mammals. Remarkably, dec2P384Rmutants lived significantly longer with improved health despite sleeping less. In particular, dec2P384R mutants were more stress resistant and displayed improved mitochondrial fitness in flight muscles. Differential gene expression analyses went on to reveal several altered tr...

How AI Is Transforming the Patient-Provider Relationship
The following is a guest article by Ronen Lavi, Co-Founder and CEO at Navina As Paul Starr famously wrote about in The Social Transformation of American Medicine, the healer’s relationship with the patient was historically perceived not unlike a religious leader’s relationship with a parishioner: an opportunity to get closer to a higher spiritual plane.  Today, with patients routinely “consulting” with online resources, self-diagnosing, or requesting medication they saw on a television ad, the physician-patient relationship has materially changed. That said, the objectives have not: patients wish for their doctors...

How Can Health IT Help Reform the CDC?
This article summarizes their responses. Paths to Interoperability A recent article exposes the woeful silo-ing of public health: Data often has to be faxed and re-entered into new systems manually. I wonder whether the path to complete integration requires adopting a single, worldwide, FHIR-based standard (which is time-consuming and probably requires jettisoning old database systems) or programming these systems to translate data from one format to another. I heard details about problems with COVID-19 lab reporting at a state level from Dr. Paulo Pinho, vice president & medical director of innovation at Availity Clin...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, February 27th 2023
This study tested the hypothesis that ischemic vascular repair in aging by Ang-(1-7) involves attenuation of myelopoietic potential in the bone marrow and decreased mobilization of inflammatory cells. Young or Old male mice of age 3-4 and 22-24 months, respectively, received Ang-(1-7) for four weeks. Myelopoiesis was evaluated in the bone marrow (BM) cells by carrying out the colony forming unit (CFU-GM) assay followed by flow cytometry of monocyte-macrophages. Expression of pro-myelopoietic factors and alarmins in the hematopoietic progenitor-enriched BM cells was evaluated. Hindlimb ischemia (HLI) was induced by ...
