This study demonstrates just how vital the thymus is to maintaining adult health." « Back to Top Does Amyloid-β Aggregation Cause Broad Disruption of Proteostasis? https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2023/08/does-amyloid-%ce%b2-aggregation-cause-broad-disruption-of-proteostasis/ Researchers here speculate on the ability of insoluble amyloid-β aggregates to be broadly disruptive of the solubility of many other proteins, and thus disruptive to cell and tissue function. Is this important in aging? The evidence here shows the existence of the mechanism in a lower species, but that doesn't n...

Bridging the Trust Gap is Key for AI to Succeed in Healthcare
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to transform healthcare. It is already helping to reduce clinician workloads and speed the analysis of large populations of patients. There is, however, a trust gap that is developing which, if left unaddressed, may hold back the widespread implementation of AI. Bridging that gap requires transparency, working closely with clinicians, and operating within strict guidelines. SAS is working towards all these goals. Healthcare IT Today recently had the opportunity to speak one-on-one with Dr. Stephen Kearney, Global Medical Director at SAS, a world leader in analytics. We asked h...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, March 13th 2023
In this study, we report the extensive and progressive accumulation of misfolded proteins during natural aging/senescence in different models, in the absence of disease. We coined the term age-ggregates to refer to this subset of proteins. Our findings demonstrate that age-ggregates exhibit the main characteristics of misfolded protein aggregates implicated in PMDs, including insolubility in detergents, protease-resistance, and staining with dyes specific for misfolded aggregates. Misfolded protein aggregates with these characteristics are thought to be implicated in some of today most prevalent diseases, including Alzheim...

AMA Touts Apples ‐to‐Oranges Study in its Fight to Preserve the Medical Cartel
This study supports the evidence that use of NPs can improve access to primary care with similar quality and cost of care. The VHA emergency medicine study that the AMA is touting makes no case against NPs and FNPs independently providing primary care. However, its findings do suggest that hospitals should prefer board ‐certified ENPs to FNPs when staffing their emergency departments with non‐physicians.Spencer Pratt is a  Research Associate in the Department of Health Policy Studies

My Trial of the New Abbott Freestyle Libre 3
There are many compelling features on the new Abbott Freestyle Libre 3 and I may decide to switch; but I may wish to first try the new Dexcom G7 once it ' s FDA-approved. But I won ' t wait forever...In my 15 years of writing this blog, one thing I have never done is something I occasionally see some younger, less-discerning members of the blogging community do: which is to pimp their blogs (and themselves) out to receive free so-called " blog-ola " . I ' ve been blogging since 2005, and I have never endorsed a product in order to get free things, nor have I ever used my blog to even solicit free stuff from companies which...

The Macro View – Health, Economics, and Politics and the Big Picture. What I Am Watching Here And Abroad.
August 18, 2022 Edition-----The main issue, probably of the year, is the increasing tension across the Taiwan Strait with all sorts of worries about how conflict can be avoided and prosperity maintained at a reasonable level as tensions continue. And hopefully ease. The impact of climate change in Europe is really becoming obvious and worrying. I am not sure just how a realistic response is possible in any reasonable time.In OZ the PM has come back after a week off to have the Chinese Ambassador tell us we are a vassal and to just shut up and behave. Astonishing and serious stuff IMVHO.-----Major Issues.-----https://www.smh...

Joan Hendrik Smidt van Gelder
My eye was caught bya recent Guardian article on how Charlotte Bischoff van Heemskerk, 101, has been reunited with a painting looted by the Nazis from her father ' s house in Arnhem 80 years ago.Her father was an art collector, and there were other works looted (seethis Guardian article, this from Looted Art,this from the Commission for Looted Art in Europe, andthis from the Art Newspaper).  The work described in those pieces had found its way to the Mansion House in London. My health librarian eye was further caught by mention of her father, Joan Hendrik Smidt van Gelder, a paediatrician at the city ' s children '...
