Consciously Exploring Your Relationship with Drugs
Humanity has a complex, long-term relationship with a wide variety of drugs. In this article let’s delve into your personal relationship with drugs, how you frame them, and how you might upgrade these relationships to be more conscious and aligned with your path of self-development. Let’s include common drug sources like coffee, tea, and chocolate too, so this will be very inclusive. My purpose here isn’t to encourage or discourage you from using any particular substances but rather to invite you to take a more conscious and honest look at your current frames, attitudes, biases, and behaviors, and dete...

My Most Intense Psychedelic Journey So Far
I blocked off Friday evening for another magic mushroom journey. For the two experiences last month, I used about 1.5g of dried mushrooms each time. This time I opted to take 4.2g, eating the dried mushrooms plain, starting at 5pm. I trust my intuition regarding how much to take, figuring this much could invite a fairly intense experience. It was actually super intense, way beyond what I experienced with ayahuasca and my two prior mushroom trips. It really started kicking in after about 40 minutes. I put on an eye mask and laid back on the couch while listening to music. It flowed nicely at first with lots of red-orange...

Do Blood Pressure Supplements Interact With Any Foods Or Drinks?
Conclusion To sum things up, blood pressure supplements are a safe and effective option for managing hypertension, and they typically do not interact with most foods and drinks. However, some fruits and beverages may reduce the effectiveness of natural supplements. To ensure that you receive the maximum benefit from your blood pressure supplements, avoiding certain foods and drinks is essential. Licorice, grapefruit, and alcohol are among the top culprits that can interfere with the efficacy of supplements and cause negative side effects. High-fat meals and salt substitutes containing potassium can also hinder ...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, April 24th 2023
In this study, researchers show that mice lacking a functional ATF4 gene show little to no loss of grip strength and treadmill performance into late life; it is quite an impressive effect size. Assessments of muscle biochemistry do show age-related declines, but to a lesser degree than the controls. How ATF4 knockout functions to produce this outcome is an interesting question. The researchers point out a range of possible downstream and upstream targets that have been implicated in the regulation of muscle growth, but it will clearly require further work to identify the important mechanisms involved. Aging slowly...

The secret to staying alert during night shifts: coffee naps and more
Working night shifts in health care, particularly emergency medicine, requires maintaining alertness and focus during extended hours. I’ve experienced firsthand the challenges and risks associated with sleep deprivation, including a frightening incident when I fell asleep while driving after a long stretch of night shifts. Fortunately, nothing serious occurred, but it highlighted the importance of Read more… The secret to staying alert during night shifts: coffee naps and more originally appeared in KevinMD.com.

Brain-eating amoeba
TL:DR – The brain-eating amoeba, Naegleria fowleri, does not eat brains but it can cause fatal brain swelling. Avoid it by only using sterile water for nasal irrigation and a noseclip when swimming in warm freshwater lakes. Mrs Sciencebase was a yoga teacher for 20 years or thereabouts and one of the most peculiar aspects of that art was the use of the neti pot. A kind of jug with a long spout that allowed to pour a little water into your nostrils as part of a cleansing ritual. Technically known as nasal irrigation, but put simply it’s nothing more than pouring water into your nose. It always struck me as a b...

The Dark Knight of health care: a doctor ’ s tale of gift cards and patient satisfaction
I was surprised when I began receiving gift cards to a national chain of coffee shops in recognition of positive patient satisfaction comments from my emergency department patients. Reviewing them in my provider report card genuinely felt good, especially when someone remembered my name in a follow-up phone call while saying something positive. Still, the Read more… The Dark Knight of health care: a doctor’s tale of gift cards and patient satisfaction originally appeared in KevinMD.com.

If a rose is a rose by any other name, how should we study treatment processes in pain management & rehabilitation?
A new instalment in my series about intensive longitudinal studies, aka ecological momentary assessment (and a host of other names for methods used to study daily life in real time in the real world). Daily life is the focus of occupational therapy – doing what needs to be done, or a person wants to do, in everyday life. It’s complex because unlike a laboratory (or a large, well-controlled randomised controlled trial) daily life is messy and there is no way to control all the interacting factors that influence why a person does what they do. A technical term for the processes involved is microtemporality, o...

Holistic Health at Sweetch: “ Feel like a person, not like a patient ”
In this video Dr. Yossi Bahagon, Co-founder and Chairman of Sweetch, discusses the deeply holistic approach they take to helping people with diabetes adopt healthy behaviors. Whereas conventional systems for connected health deliver cold, generic instructions (“walk another 4,000 steps”;  “take your medication now”), Sweetch intensely personalizes messages: “Why don’t you take an umbrella and walk just nine minutes through the rain to your favorite coffee shop.” Sweetch is comprehensive. It collects data from the patient’s phone and any connected devices they wear, and combi...

Gene Pathway Analysis In Action – 3 × 4 DNA Test Review
In the past couple of years, I have taken at least 10 genetic tests, including this latest DNA test from 3×4 Genetics. This may seem excessive, but I have my reasons. I graduated from medical school as a genetic specialist and completed my PhD as a clinical genomics researcher, and although I turned to medical futurism, my original field never ceases to fascinate me. I’m very curious about how these tests advance and hope I might be able to provide insights for patients worldwide about what they can expect to learn from such tests and what those tests can really deliver. Thus, I didn’t hesitate for a second to ...

Generative Adversarial Networks: How Can AI Learn So Much While Its IQ Remains Zero?
A short while ago we wrote about why it is a good idea to get friendly with AI before it arrives in your everyday work environment. We introduced the text-to-art algorithm Midjourney – as an easy and entertaining partner for this venture. But how do these algorithms work? How can they translate our words (Superman and Wonderwoman in Starbucks) into (more or less) fitting images? And how is it possible that while these models get better and better, their IQ remains 0? Superman and Wonderwoman in Starbucks – by Midjourney Welcome to the wonderful world of Generative Adversarial Networks or GANs for short...
