Milwaukee County Addresses Health Equity with Data and GIS Technology
Milwaukee County is at the forefront of addressing racial inequity. During the COVID-19 pandemic they cross referenced vaccination rates with the CDC’s social vulnerability index and plotted the results using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology. Armed with this powerful insight, the County was able to increase vaccinations in populations that needed them the most and by doing so increased the safety of the entire County. They are now incorporating an equity lens into other areas of public health. Healthcare IT Today had the opportunity recently to sit down with Zachary Swingen, Lead GIS Coordinator at Milwauke...

The (sort of, partial) Father mRNA Vaccines Who Now Spreads Vaccine Misinformation (Part 2)
By DAVID WARMFLASH, MD This is part 2 of David Warmlash’s takedown of Robert W. Malone’s appearance (transcript) on the Rogan podcast. Part 1 is here Menstruation and Fertility Much more than the line about reproductive damage in the Wisconsin News clip that we used to open the story, Malone used the Rogan interview to dive more deeply into the topic, starting with:  …there’s a huge number of dysmenorrhea and menometrorrhagia… By that, he meant excessive menstrual cramping and very heavy, often irregular, bleeding, which he followed up with: …they DENY it… Judging by other parts ...

COVID herd immunity: At hand or forever elusive?
By MICHEL ACCAD, MD With cases of COVID-19 either disappeared or rapidly diminishing from places like Wuhan, Italy, New York, and Sweden, many voices are speculating that herd immunity may have been reached in those areas and that it may be at hand in the remaining parts of the world that are still struggling with the pandemic.  Lockdowns should end—or may not have been needed to begin with, they conclude. Adding plausibility to their speculation is the discovery of biological evidence suggesting that prior exposure to other coronaviruses may confer some degree of immunity against SARS-CoV2, a...

How Could Digital Tools Help Fight Against Anti-Vaccination?
Anti-vaccination movements lure increasingly more people into skipping potentially life-saving immunization against infectious diseases, such as measles, mumps, or rubella, highly impairing herd immunity for entire communities. Social media platforms could restrict the reach of anti-vax messages, groups, and activities, with algorithms recommending tailor-made content and health apps providing information about vaccinations. Here’s our collection of the most recent steps and digital tools supporting the fight against anti-vaccination and its believers. 300 percent increase in measles globally In a widely shared soc...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, January 28th 2019
In this study, we show that calorie restriction is protective against age-related increases in senescence and microglia activation and pro-inflammatory cytokine expression in an animal model of aging. Further, these protective effects mitigated age-related decline in neuroblast and neuronal production, and enhanced olfactory memory performance, a behavioral index of neurogenesis in the SVZ. Our results support the concept that calorie restriction might be an effective anti-aging intervention in the context of healthy brain aging. Greater Modest Activity in Late Life Correlates with Lower Incidence of Dementia ...

A Recent Update on the Use of Immune Ablation and HSCT to Treat Autoimmunity
For more than twenty years now, Richard Burt's research teams have been working on the treatment of autoimmunity through the destruction and recreation of the immune system. Autoimmunity is a malfunction in the self-tolerance of immune cells, leading them to attack patient tissues. The malfunction is entirely contained in the immune system, so if the immune system is destroyed and replaced, the autoimmunity stops. If the genesis of autoimmunity is happenstance, an unfortunate one-time accident, then this is a cure. But if autoimmunity has a trigger outside the immune system in a given patient, it will return after some per...

Forever Damaged From An Untested 8-in-1 Vaccine, Help Needed As Jodie ’s Legal Battle Continues
Conclusion We don’t know how many other children were given this experimental vaccine, but Jodie Marchant is the only one known to have survived this and her family is the only family in the world to hold the records proving this vaccine corruption has gone on. In recent times, due to immense pressure regarding informed consent not being provided often enough to parents by doctors, the Supreme Court Montgomery ruling was passed. This ruling will help change the way doctors provide informed consent and should help families receive compensation for their child’s vaccine injury. This ruling might also help the Marchants w...

Anti-vaccination beliefs don ’t follow the usual conservative and liberal lines
When health officials learned that the 2015 measles outbreak was caused by clusters of unvaccinated children, Americans once more wanted to understand why some parents do not vaccinate their children. In our highly polarized culture, media commentators and even academics began to connect opposition to vaccination to either the left or right of politics. So a question arises: Who is more likely to be opposed to vaccination, liberals or conservatives? As a sociologist who studies infectious disease, I took a look at this. The answer seems to depend on what question you ask. Because the outbreak started in the wealthy, libera...

All About Infant Immunizations: Q & A with Pediatrician Dr. Adam Spanier
Adam Spanier, MD, PhD, MPH is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and a Pediatrician with University of Maryland Medical Center. What vaccines are recommended for infants and children? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has a group of medical and public health experts called the Advisory Committee of Immunization Practices. They develop and regularly review vaccine recommendations. Parents should talk to their pediatrician or family doctor, or reference the CDC or American Academy of Pediatrics. It’s important to know the vaccine schedule is revi...

A Necessary Retelling of the Smallpox Vaccine Story
A curious confluence of events unfolded Tuesday night. Just hours before President Obama uttered the powerful “science and reason matter” in his farewell address, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced that the incoming president had tapped him to head a committee on vaccine safety. RFK Jr. is not a pediatric immunologist nor an epidemiologist, but a vocal “vaccine skeptic.” Although the PEOTUS dialed back on the purported appointment shortly after social media erupted, a tweet from March 28, 2014 makes his analysis of the history and science of vaccines clear: Healthy young child goes ...

Vetting Vaccines
Last week, President-Elect Trump received a visit from none other than Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who our colleague Walter Olsonrefers to as America ’s Most Irresponsible Public Figure. Keeping with this title, Kennedy will be joining the Trump team on a panel to vet vaccine safety. This, like many of Trumps moves, will create international debate. For example, the most prominent advocate in Britain of the idea that there is a link between vaccinations (in his case the MMR or measles, mumps and rubella vaccine) and autism was Dr. Andrew Wakefield, whose 1998Lancet paper (now retracted) attracted vast global interest. But Dr. ...
