Release of Acetylcholine is Necessary for the Aging Brain to Compensate for a Lack of Neurogenesis
We examined whether adult neurogenesis sustains hippocampal connections cumulatively across the life span. Long-term suppression of neurogenesis as occurs during stress and aging resulted in an accelerated decline in hippocampal acetylcholine signaling and a slow and progressing emergence of profound working memory deficits. These deficits were accompanied by compensatory reorganization of cholinergic dentate gyrus inputs with increased cholinergic innervation to the ventral hippocampus and recruitment of ventrally projecting neurons by the dorsal projection. While increased cholinergic innervation was dysfunctional...

Security When Lives are on the Line
Computer vulnerabilities, threats, and security practices are similar in every industry. But health care presents particular challenges, discussed in this video with John Wilson, Director of Sales, SLED and Healthcare at SolarWinds and Scott Pross, Vice President of Technology, Monalytic, a SolarWinds company.  Wilson and Pross make up part of the new dedicated team that SolarWinds has put together for healthcare. Several factors make health care challenging. Patient data is particularly sensitive and highly regulated, leading Pross to say “We treat our health care customers the way we treat our DoD customers”...

Finding Balance in Patient-Centric RCM
The following is a guest article by Laxmi Patel, Chief Strategy Officer at Savista Achieving a delicate equilibrium between automation and human engagement is critical. In the world of healthcare, this balance not only enhances the patient experience but also enables systems to effectively manage patient communication and financial obligations while delivering optimal clinical care.  As the industry shifts focus to automation and processes to lower cost-to-collect, it is vital to ensure that these efforts remain patient-centric.   Instead of being seen as just a series of numbers, financial statements, and outcomes, a s...

Declining Cardiovascular Mortality in Atrial Fibrillation Patients
A downward trend in cardiovascular mortality has prevailed for some time now, and we might take the data here as an example of ways in which improved options for detection and treatment produce results in specific portions of the patient population. Also worthy of note is the point that these older patients have many issues, and while slowing the pace of cardiovascular decline with age should have beneficial effects throughout the body, reduced cardiovascular mortality due to improved treatment that specifically focuses on cardiovascular disease allows other age-related conditions to claim a greater proportion of the popul...

Physical Fitness Correlates with Slower Epigenetic Aging in Newer DNA Methylation Clocks
In conclusion, although the contribution of CRF to GrimAgeAccel and FitAgeAccel is relatively low compared to lifestyle-related factors such as smoking, the results suggest that the maintenance of CRF is associated with delayed biological ageing in older men.

HFMA Edition: How Are You Incorporating AI and Technology like ChatGPT Into Your Organization or Product?
The overarching goal of incorporating AI into the world of healthcare has always been to make the lives of our practitioners and patients easier. Sometimes this can mean using chatbots so patients can have an immediate response to their questions. Sometimes this can mean letting an AI run through the mundane repetitive tasks of the practitioners, freeing up their schedules for what really matters. There are just so many areas of healthcare that the possibilities of how and where you integrate new technology like AI and ChatGPT into your organization are endless. To prove this point we reached out to three different organiz...

Intermittent Fasting Reduces Pathology in a Mouse Model of Alzheimer ' s Disease
The sizable body of work produced on calorie restriction and fasting over the last twenty years is supportive of the hypothesis that time spent hungry is an important factor determining the scale of benefits to health and longevity. The cellular response to a transient lack of nutrients involves improved cell maintenance, such as upregulation of autophagy to clear out damaged and worn molecular machinery. Looking at a level of organization above the cell, a transient state of hunger likely produces many other benefits to the way in which complex tissues and relationships between tissues function in the body. It dampens inf...

Navigating feminism in medicine
“Become the doctor your parents always wanted you to marry,” said the T-shirt I purchased from the women in medicine interest group during my first year of medical school. I remember feeling like I should buy that T-shirt (and I did), yet it was also something I was never quite comfortable wearing. It was a Read more… Navigating feminism in medicine originally appeared in KevinMD.com.

Dr. Temi, The Autonomous Robot Will See You Now
It seems we’re just at the start of robots in healthcare.  We see them moving around supplies.  We see robots working in the pharmacy.  Plus, we have a long list of robots doing virtual tasks.  When I came across the Dr. Temi robot, it was the first application of an autonomous robot to assist nurses and doctors that I’d seen. At the HIMSS annual conference, we sat down with Yaron Yoels, CMO at Temi Robot, to learn more about Dr. Temi, an autonomous robot for patient care.  What’s cool about this robot is that it doesn’t need a nurse to get to the bedside.  The robot can go to the room request...

Bridging the Representation Gap in Biomedical Research
“We hope that students come out of our program feeling like they’re part of a community. Many of us feel inadequate or struggle in some way during graduate school—it can be a challenging time. I want to build a community that our students can always come back to for support,” says Elana Ehrlich, Ph.D., the co-director of the Bridges to the Doctorate Research Training Program (B2D) at Towson University in Towson, Maryland, alongside Michelle Snyder, Ph.D.. The Towson B2D is one of several NIGMS-supported B2Ds, which are dedicated to developing a diverse pool of well-trained biomedical scientists who will transiti...
