Review Lignin Valorization: Improving Lignin Processing in the Biorefinery
Research and development activities directed toward commercial production of cellulosic ethanol have created the opportunity to dramatically increase the transformation of lignin to value-added products. Here, we highlight recent advances in this lignin valorization effort. Discovery of genetic variants in native populations of bioenergy crops and direct manipulation of biosynthesis pathways have produced lignin feedstocks with favorable properties for recovery and downstream conversion. Advances in analytical chemistry and computational modeling detail the structure of the modified lignin and direct bioengineering strateg...

Deadly Medicines and Organised Crime: a review
This is a web version of a review of Peter Gotzsche’s book. It appeared in the April 2014 Healthwatch Newsletter. Read the whole newsletter. It has lots of good stuff. Their newsletters are here. Healthwatch has been exposing quackery since 1989. Their very first newsletter is still relevant. Most new drugs and vaccines are developed by the pharmaceutical industry. The industry has produced huge benefits for mankind. But since the Thatcherite era it has come to be dominated by marketing people who appear to lack any conscience. That’s what gave rise to the Alltrials movement. It was founded in January 2013...

Differential relations between facets of complex problem solving and students’ immigration background.
Whereas the assessment of complex problem solving (CPS) has received increasing attention in the context of international large-scale assessments, its fairness in regard to students’ cultural background has gone largely unexplored. On the basis of a student sample of 9th-graders (N = 299), including a representative number of immigrant students (N = 127), the present study evaluated (a) whether CPS can be assessed fairly among students with or without immigration background and (b) whether achievement differences between these groups exist. Results showed that fair assessment of CPS is possible using the Genetics Lab, a ...

Proposed FDA Guidance on Financial Disclosure and the Physician Payment Sunshine Regulations – Divergent Paths and Duplicated Efforts
Conclusion  The increased regulation and requirements to disclose FCOIs creates a tremendous burden for researchers and institutions that are repetitive, overlapping but not-identical, and time-consuming.  Nevertheless, institutions that receive PHS funding can manage FCOIs in a number of ways: (1) public disclosure of the FCOI (e.g., when presenting or publishing the research); (2) disclosure of the FCOI directly to human participants; (3) appointment of an independent monitor capable of taking measures to protect the design, conduct, and reporting of the research against bias resulting from the FCOI; (4) modification ...

Rosenberg and Pringle , what a team!
Selling Marked Up Drugs with Made Up Patients-- Part Two by Martha Rosenberg and Evelyn Pringle No drug ads or Pharma sponsors dot the website of the Child & Adolescent Bipolar Foundation which has renamed itself the Zen-like "Balanced Mind Foundation." (Meditation/medication--same idea, right?) Instead, visitors to the site will find slick slide shows, tales of children saved by bipolar drugs and a list of donor families. But according to the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry the actual guidelines the Balanced Mind Foundation uses to discern bipolar disorder in children and adolescents w...

Pfizer, Zoloft And The Vexing Placebo Effect
In an unusual gambit, a California woman has filed a lawsuit claiming that the Zoloft antidepressant sold by Pfizer is no more effective than a placebo and that the drugmaker conspired to hide this fact from the medical community and the public in hopes of generating as many sales as possible. For its part, Pfizer contends that studies have shown that Zoloft is effective and maintains the lawsuit is frivolous. The lawsuit was filed by Laura Plumlee, who maintains that Zoloft failed to help her during three years of treatment. She argues that most clinical trials that were designed to substantiate effectiveness demonstrated...
