Factors associated with mucosal involvement in tegumentary leishmaniasis: a nation-based study using surveillance data from Brazil
This study aimed to assess the factors associated with mucosal leishmaniasis (ML) within the scope of tegumentary leishmaniasis (TL) cases reported in Brazil. Surveillance data were assessed, and comparisons were made between ML and cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) cases. Additionally, ML incidence rates for municipalities were depicted through a geographic information system. From 2007 to 2017, 235,489 TL cases were reported, of which 235,232 were classified as follows: 14,204 (6%) were ML cases and 221,028 (94%) were CL cases. Multivariate analysis showed that the proportion of ML cases reached 16.8% among individuals >75...

Drug use among medical students in S ão Paulo, Brazil: a cross-sectional study during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of substance use was high in this population and increased from the basic to the clinical cycle. The COVID-19 pandemic may have affected the frequency of drug use and prevalence estimates.PMID:37703121 | PMC:PMC10495101 | DOI:10.1590/1516-3180.2022.0493.R1.150623

Preabortion ultrasound - a patient perspective
CONCLUSION: Most women opting for medical abortion through telemedicine did not undergo a pre-abortion ultrasound scan. The main reason stated was that women did not find it necessary, lack of resources and privacy issues.PMID:37698511 | DOI:10.1080/13625187.2023.2249158

Evaluation of the skin whitening and antioxidant activity of < em > Myracrodum urundeuva < /em > extract (aroeira-do-sert ão)
Nat Prod Res. 2023 Sep 11:1-6. doi: 10.1080/14786419.2023.2254457. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMyracrodruon urundeuva, popularly known as 'aroeira-do-sertão', a large tree, with a tall trunk. Belonging to the Anacardiaceae family, it occurs in the 'caatinga' and dry forests of Brazil, from Ceará to the states of Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul. The present study aimed to analyse the whitening and antioxidant activities of the aqueous extract of the leaves of Myracrodroun urundeuva (AELMU). Inhibition of the tyrosinase enzyme, as well as its copper chelating capacity and antioxidant effect were evaluated. The AELMU (at 2...

Insights into the organic matter composition of soda lakes in the Pantanal, Brazil, through fatty acids analysis in sediments
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Sep 11. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29764-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe conducted a geochemical analysis on three sediment cores collected from soda and freshwater lakes in the Pantanal region, in Brazil. Our objective was to identify the primary sources of organic matter associated with the Pleistocene-Holocene transition, as previously documented in that area. The Nhecolandia region, located in the Pantanal, encompasses over 10,000 lakes, with approximately 10% of them exhibiting alkaline characteristics. Soda lakes became highly saline and alkaline after ~ 910 cal yr BP, which influenc...

In vitro evaluation of the cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of Al and Mn in ambient concentrations detected in groundwater intended for human consumption
Ecotoxicol Environ Saf. 2023 Sep 9;264:115415. doi: 10.1016/j.ecoenv.2023.115415. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEnvironmental exposure to metals can induce cytotoxic and genotoxic effects in cells and affect the health of the exposed population. To investigate the effects of aluminum (Al) and manganese (Mn), we evaluated their cytogenotoxicity using peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) exposed to these metals at previously quantified concentrations in groundwater intended for human consumption. The cell viability, membrane integrity, nuclear division index (NDI), oxidative stress, cell death, cell cycle, and DNA dama...

The Pan-American NanoBiophotonics Team
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2023 Sep 11:e202312611. doi: 10.1002/anie.202312611. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis invited Team Profile was created by the Zheng Lab (UHN, Toronto, Canada), the CEPOF BioPhotonics Lab (USP, São Carlos, Brazil), and the BiOPI Lab (UC Chile, Santiago, Chile). They recently published an article on an Indocyanine Green (ICG) nanoemulsion in which 100 % dimerization and J-aggregation occurs spontaneously afford a nanostructured shell of dimeric ICG (Nano-dICG). This material demonstrates superior photothermal conversion efficiency, photostability, and structure stability over ICG, giving an ultra-s...
