Validating a machine-learning model for first-trimester prediction of pre-eclampsia using the cohort from the PREVAL study
CONCLUSION: A machine learning model for first-trimester prediction of PE based on a neural network provides effective screening for PE that can be applied in different populations but before doing so it is essential to make adjustments for the analyzers used for biochemical testing. Red fire ants, a dreaded pest, have invaded Europe
Last week, international experts warned that invasive species are costing the world economy almost half-a-trillion dollars annually . Today, researchers confirmed that one of the most fearsome invaders—the red fire ant ( Solenopsis invicta ), a pest native to South America that packs a painful sting and infests houses and crops—has taken hold in Italy. It is the first European detection of colonies, which are known to drive out native ants and other wildlife and damage electrical equipment. “The findings are an important call for immediate action,” says Cleo Bertelsmeier, an expert in invasive inse...

Microplastics exposure and immunologic response
CONCLUSIONS: Unless the plastic value chain is transformed over the next two decades, the risks to species, marine ecosystems, climate, health, economy, and communities will be unmanageable. However, along with these risks are the unique opportunities to help transition to a more sustainable world.PMID:37695231 | DOI:10.15586/aei.v51i5.834

Prevalence and time trends of symptoms of allergic rhinitis and rhinoconjunctivitis in Spanish children: Global Asthma Network (GAN) study
CONCLUSIONS: There has been a stabilisation of rhinitis, rhinoconjunctivitis and nasal allergy in schoolchildren that slows the previous upward trend of ISAAC; and a slight non-significant increase in rhinoconjunctivitis and nasal allergy in adolescents. The variability found in adolescents would require local research to be better understood.PMID:37695222 | DOI:10.15586/aei.v51i1.711

Promoting societal resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic: a multi-country analysis of public health strategies
CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of Public Health in developing proper strategies and utilizing digitals tools to counteract infodemic and spread relevant information. Healthcare workers should improve their communication skills to face future epidemics and be trusted by the population. Social media and digital platforms should be studied and used effectively in times of emergency.PMID:37695174 | DOI:10.23750/abm.v94iS3.14562

Evidence for environment hypothesis: Cross-cultural measurement invariance of the composite scale of morningness across Bangladesh and Spain
In this study, we applied the Composite Scale of Morningness (CSM) to Bangladeshi (n = 1015; 37.9% women) and Spanish (n = 1054; 73.2% women) university students (aged 18-27 years) to evaluate alternative factorial models of the CSM and to test its measurement invariance across cultures. Moreover, this study tested environment hypothesis, suggesting that higher average temperatures and lower latitudes would be related to greater morningness. From nine competing factorial models, a bifactor model with two specific factors (morning preference and morning affect) showed the best fit for both cultures. The two-factor bifactor ...

Comprehensive analysis of research trends and prospects in electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) for wastewater treatment
Chemosphere. 2023 Sep 9:140083. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.140083. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTElectrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) have emerged as a promising approach for efficient wastewater treatment. However, despite their promising potential, there is a lack of comprehensive analysis regarding the research trends, bibliometric data, and research frontiers of EAOPs. To address this gap, this study conducted a thorough and comprehensive analysis of 2347 related articles in the Web of Science Core Collection Database from 2012 to 2022. The analysis included information on countries, authors, insti...
