Emerging therapeutic options for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: A systematic review
CONCLUSION: The data analyzed in this review showed clinically significant improvement in individual histological features of NAFLD in both animal and human trials for all four classes, as well as good safety profiles (P < 0.05). We believe this compilation of information will have positive clinical implications in obtaining an FDA-approved therapy for NAFLD.PMID:37701920 | PMC:PMC10494562 | DOI:10.4254/wjh.v15.i8.1001

Conceptualizing multiplicity spectrum experiences: A systematic review and thematic synthesis
DISCUSSION: This review highlights heterogeneity within multiplicity-spectrum experiences, emphasizing the need for person-centred, individualized understanding, separate from mental health conceptualizations. Therefore, training in person-centred individualized care to promote self-concept clarity is needed across health, education and social care. This systematic review is the first to synthesize voices of people with lived experience across the multiplicity spectrum, demonstrating how qualitative research can contribute to advancing our understanding of this complex phenomena with the community, acknowledging reciprocal...

Longitudinal analysis of differences and similarities in antimicrobial resistance among commensal Escherichia coli isolated from market swine and sows at slaughter in the United States of America, 2013-2019
Int J Food Microbiol. 2023 Sep 7;407:110388. doi: 10.1016/j.ijfoodmicro.2023.110388. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe emergence of antimicrobial resistance in swine enteric bacteria poses a significant public health challenge. Our study evaluated publicly available data collected by the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System for Enteric Bacteria (NARMS) between 2013 and 2019 at slaughter plants across the United States of America, focusing on commensal E. coli isolated from swine cecal contents originating from two distinct swine production systems: market hogs (n = 2090) and sows (n = 1147). In both producti...

Red fire ants, a dreaded pest, have invaded Europe
Last week, international experts warned that invasive species are costing the world economy almost half-a-trillion dollars annually . Today, researchers confirmed that one of the most fearsome invaders—the red fire ant ( Solenopsis invicta ), a pest native to South America that packs a painful sting and infests houses and crops—has taken hold in Italy. It is the first European detection of colonies, which are known to drive out native ants and other wildlife and damage electrical equipment. “The findings are an important call for immediate action,” says Cleo Bertelsmeier, an expert in invasive inse...

The complex biology of aryl hydrocarbon receptor activation in cancer and beyond
Biochem Pharmacol. 2023 Sep 9:115798. doi: 10.1016/j.bcp.2023.115798. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) signaling pathway is a complex regulatory network that plays a critical role in various biological processes, including cellular metabolism, development, and immune responses. The complexity of AHR signaling arises from multiple factors, including the diverse ligands that activate the receptor, the expression level of AHR itself, and its interaction with the AHR nuclear translocator (ARNT). Additionally, the AHR crosstalks with the AHR repressor (AHRR) or other transcription factors and si...

Clinical Characteristics and Outcomes of Chagas Disease in the United States: A Multicenter Retrospective Analysis
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2023 Sep 11:tpmd230361. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.23-0361. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChagas disease affects approximately 300,000 patients in the United States. We evaluated a multicenter U.S.-based network to obtain clinical characteristics and outcomes of chronic Chagas disease by disease forms. This was a U.S.-based, multicenter, population-based, retrospective cohort study. We queried TriNetX, a global research network, to identify patients with dual-positive IgG serology for Trypanosoma cruzi. We captured outcomes of interest for up to 5 years. We found 429 patients with evidence of dual-positive T. cr...
