Contribution of school meals to the recommended nutrient and energy intake of children enrolled in the National Homegrown School Feeding Program in Zaria, Nigeria
CONCLUSION: The meals served through the NHSFP contributed at least 33% of the RNI for energy, protein, iron, calcium, sodium, vitamin A, and zinc. However, they could not meet the 33% of the RNI for carbohydrates, fiber, potassium, and vitamin C. Increasing the portion sizes and the diversity of the meals can address the suboptimal contribution of the meals to the RNI for carbohydrates, fiber, potassium, and vitamin C.PMID:37704525 | DOI:10.1016/j.arcped.2023.07.004

An experimental approach to determine the gamma radiation interaction mean free path and exposure buildup factor for biomolecules
Appl Radiat Isot. 2023 Sep 6;201:111012. doi: 10.1016/j.apradiso.2023.111012. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis experimental approach was designed to understand the gamma interaction parameters for the essential biomolecules, including starch soluble, cholesterol, myristic acid, glucose, oxalic acid, dextrose, salicylic acid, ethyl cellulose and sucrose. The empirical determination of gamma interaction parameters, such as interaction mean-free-path (MFP), buildup factor, and effective atomic number (Zeff) was performed by measuring mass attenuation coefficient (μ/ρ) at energies of 356 keV, 511 keV, 662 keV, 1173 keV, 12...

Problem exploration for creating value propositions when developing point-of-care solutions
Biosens Bioelectron. 2023 Aug 31;241:115636. doi: 10.1016/j.bios.2023.115636. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPoint-of-care (POC) testing has been increasingly proposed as one of the most promising solutions for improving healthcare provision as it enables fast and accurate testing both inside and outside hospital settings. Many of these POC device stem from academic research. Yet, the commercialization of these devices through academic spin-offs is not straigthforward. Many academic spin-offs fail due to an inproperly articulated value proposition. To create a value proposition with biosensors it is crucial to understand ho...

Drug use among medical students in S ão Paulo, Brazil: a cross-sectional study during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of substance use was high in this population and increased from the basic to the clinical cycle. The COVID-19 pandemic may have affected the frequency of drug use and prevalence estimates.PMID:37703121 | DOI:10.1590/1516-3180.2022.0493.R1.150623

CROI 2023: Summary of Basic Science Research in HIV
Top Antivir Med. 2023 Jun 30;31(4):523-528.ABSTRACTThe 2023 Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) represented the first fully in-person conference since the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic began. CROI continues as the premier conference in which delegates can appraise themselves of almost every facet of HIV/AIDS research as well as emerging and re-emerging pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2 and mpox. The return to an in-person format is particularly important for early-stage investigators, who were faced with challenges of advancing their independent research careers...

Outcomes of minimally invasive versus conventional sternotomy for redo mitral valve surgery according to Mitral Valve Academic Research Consortium: A systematic review and meta-analysis
This study aims to evaluate the outcomes of both procedures according to the Mitral Valve Academic Research Consortium (MVARC). This systematic review and meta-analysis were performed in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA). Literature searching was performed in several databases including PubMed, EBSCOhost, Scopus, and Proquest up to 28 February 2022. Meta-analysis using proportions or means was applied. A total of 13 retrospective cohort articles were included in this study. The incidence of in-hospital mortality (3% vs 9.2%, OR = 0.35; 95% CI: 0.21-0.58; P ≤ 0.000...

Postgraduate nurse education in Indonesia and Australia: A comparative analysis
CONCLUSIONS: While there are many areas of similarity, postgraduate nurse education is more diverse in Australia, while there are growing opportunities for new developments in Indonesia. This analysis identifies areas for future consideration around postgraduate education development in both countries, along with possibilities for future collaboration. Furthermore, comparative analysis provided a useful foundation on mapping key elements.PMID:37703747 | DOI:10.1016/j.nedt.2023.105954

Epidemiology Of Postoperative Complications After Esophagectomy: Implications for Management
CONCLUSIONS: Maintaining a high index of suspicion for early postoperative complications is crucial for rescuing patients after esophagectomy. Early postoperative pneumonia and atrial fibrillation may be sentinel complications for an anastomotic leak, and their occurrence may be used to prompt further clinical investigation. Early recovery protocols should consider the development of early complications into postoperative feeding and imaging algorithms.PMID:37704003 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2023.09.004
