Identifying firefighters' situation awareness requirements for fire and non-fire emergencies using a goal-directed task analysis
Appl Ergon. 2023 Sep 14;114:104136. doi: 10.1016/j.apergo.2023.104136. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA firefighter's situation awareness (SA) is considered crucial to making effective tactical decisions and actions at the scene. Despite the importance of the firefighter's SA, there have been limited research efforts to understand what cues and information firefighters use to assess ongoing situations and predict future conditions. In addition to fire events, contemporary firefighters respond to an increasing volume of non-fire incidents. Thus, this study aims to identify firefighters' SA during three fire incidents (single...

Characterization of Multiple Resistance Genes of Escherichia coli Strains Isolated from Food and Clinical Samples
Cell Mol Biol (Noisy-le-grand). 2023 Jul 31;69(7):118-126. doi: 10.14715/cmb/2023.69.7.19.ABSTRACTMulti-drug resistance (MDR), which is formed by the development of antimicrobial resistance, which is one of the defense mechanisms in bacteria, has pushed human beings to constantly seek new antimicrobial agents in the fight against these microorganisms. Speed and precision are very important in identifying resistance in strains with MDR that reach humans in an open system through the consumption of contaminated food or water. The main aim of this study was the molecular characterization of ESBL gene variants (blaTEM, blaOXA,...

Olfactory training: Effects of multisensory integration, attention towards odors and physical activity
Chem Senses. 2023 Sep 16:bjad037. doi: 10.1093/chemse/bjad037. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOlfactory training (OT) has been shown to be of value in the treatment of olfactory dysfunction. The present study aimed to investigate whether the efficacy of OT could be modulated with multisensory integration, attention towards odors, odor complexity, or physical activity assessed with a questionnaire. One hundred healthy participants were recruited and divided into four groups. Except for controls (n=26, mean age±sd = 36±15 years) all participants performed OT four times a day. In the "Video" group (n=26, age 39±19 years) OT...

Routine ear health and hearing checks for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children aged under 6  years attending primary care: a national consensus statement
Med J Aust. 2023 Sep 16. doi: 10.5694/mja2.52100. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis consensus statement provides new recommendations for primary care assessment of ear health and hearing status of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who are not known to have, or are not being actively managed for, ear health and hearing problems. Any child identified with otitis media should be actively managed. This national consensus statement extends existing treatment and management guidelines. MAIN RECOMMENDATIONS: Undertake checks at least 6-monthly, commencing at 6 months until 4 years of age, then at 5 years. Unde...

The protective value of trait mindfulness for mothers' anxiety during the perinatal period
CONCLUSIONS: For pregnant women who are at risk for developing or experiencing high levels of anxiety, it may be beneficial to participate in a mindfulness training with special attention for the attitudinal aspects of mindfulness.PMID:37716215 | DOI:10.1016/j.actpsy.2023.104034

Home-based exercise improves subclinical atherosclerosis marker in multiple sclerosis
CONCLUSION: The EX group had modest, yet significant, increases in aerobic capacity over the 12-week period, coupled with improvements in T25FW speed and vasodilatory reactivity. A home-based exercise intervention can improve outcomes of a subclinical marker of atherosclerosis, which provides a basis for examining these outcomes in persons prescreened for CVD-related comorbidities and/or mobility issues.PMID:37716212 | DOI:10.1016/j.msard.2023.105002

"I have a special prayer 'O Lord, open my lips'": Experiences of ultra-Orthodox educators after their students' disclosures of sexual abuse
CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights the importance of ultra-Orthodox educators in identifying CSA and leading interventions. It also raises the need for training to combine reflective, cultural-based practice and support for the educator to maintain their wellbeing. Despite this community's uniqueness, the current findings may be relevant to professionals and policymakers regarding other closed and religious communities and diverse educational settings confronting CSA.PMID:37716087 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2023.106449

Career goals of surgeons in Switzerland
CONCLUSION: The current study found that surgeons in Switzerland remain highly motivated to pursue leadership positions in their respective fields. Going forward, the challenge will lie in reconciling the needs of the respective departments with the personal ambition, career opportunities, and desired work-life balance of young trainees.PMID:37715800 | DOI:10.1007/s00423-023-03092-z

Constructing phylogenetic networks via cherry picking and machine learning
CONCLUSIONS: Unlike the existing exact methods, our heuristics are applicable to datasets of practical size, and the experimental study we conducted on both simulated and real data shows that these solutions are qualitatively good, always within some small constant factor from the optimum. Moreover, our machine-learned heuristics are one of the first applications of machine learning to phylogenetics and show its promise.PMID:37717003 | DOI:10.1186/s13015-023-00233-3

Evaluation of a pilot to introduce simulated learning activities to support speech and language therapy students' clinical development
CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS: Student experience of simulation was positive. One of the key elements students found to support their clinical skills was the importance of the safe space; support for learning instead of correction led them to engage in active learning. Key barriers to simulation related to having sufficient prior knowledge, the skills of the facilitator, group size and the wider learning landscape of the programme. In response to this pilot, there are plans to continue developing this model of simulation and embed simulation across the programme, led by a sound pedagogical approach with clear preparation and ...

Ensuring treatment fidelity in intervention studies: Developing a checklist and scoring system within a behaviour change paradigm
CONCLUSIONS: Results emphasise the importance of training quality, practice and reflective opportunities and clear materials to promote treatment fidelity. The construction of the checklist and scoring system was described in detail, informing the development of future checklists. After further trialling, the checklist can be used to ensure the M-DLS is delivered with high treatment fidelity in the comparison trial.WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on this subject Treatment fidelity is an essential component of intervention effectiveness and efficacy studies, ensuring the intervention is delivered as intended. It...

Evaluation of Discharge Training Given to Patients Undergoing Revascularization
CONCLUSIONS: Female nurses aged 41 and over, working in the revascularization laboratory, and reading the relevant literature performed postrevascularization patient discharge training practices at a higher level compared to other nurses. The importance of nurses' field specialization training, advancing age with working years, experience, and access to current literature for better patient care is emphasized.PMID:37715750 | DOI:10.1016/j.jopan.2023.05.010
