A Comparison of the effect of patient-specific vs. weight-based protocols to treat vaso-occlusive episodes (VOE) in the emergency department
CONCLUSIONS: We found a shorter ED length of stay for patients assigned to a PSP. Patients in both groups experienced good pain relief without significant side effects.PMID:37731093 | DOI:10.1111/acem.14805

Par3L, a polarity protein, promotes M1 macrophage polarization and aggravates atherosclerosis in mice via p65 and ERK activation
In this study, we investigated the roles of the polar protein Par3L in M1 macrophage polarization and atherosclerosis. To induce atherosclerosis, Apoe-/- mice were fed with an atherosclerotic Western diet for 8 or 16 weeks. We showed that Par3L expression was significantly increased in human and mouse atherosclerotic plaques. In primary mouse macrophages, oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL, 50 μg/mL) time-dependently increased Par3L expression. In Apoe-/- mice, adenovirus-mediated Par3L overexpression aggravated atherosclerotic plaque formation accompanied by increased M1 macrophages in atherosclerotic plaques and bo...

s-CRIq: the online short version of the Cognitive Reserve Index Questionnaire
CONCLUSION: The s-CRIq proved to be a simple and easy-to-administer tool. Similarly, to the original version, the s-CRIq is freely available on the web, and it is our hope that it will be of fruitful use for researchers and clinicians alike.PMID:37733229 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02561-1

Application of machine learning model in predicting the likelihood of blood transfusion after hip fracture surgery
CONCLUSION: The five models we developed all performed well in predicting the likelihood of blood transfusion after hip fracture surgery. Therefore, we believed that the prediction model based on machine learning had great application prospects in clinical practice, which could help clinicians better predict the risk of blood transfusion after hip fracture surgery.PMID:37733228 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02550-4

Temporal evolution of antiretroviral therapy (2017-2021): analysis of treatment change and its economic impact
CONCLUSIONS: Optimization/simplification accounts for almost half of the reasons for TAR change, with an economic impact that, despite the inflection point of 2019, each year manages to exceed the previous one, achieving a progressive cost reduction maintained over time.PMID:37731312 | DOI:10.37201/req/047.2023

Cardiovascular Imaging in Contemporary Cardio-Oncology: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association
Circulation. 2023 Sep 21. doi: 10.1161/CIR.0000000000001174. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAdvances in cancer therapeutics have led to dramatic improvements in survival, now inclusive of nearly 20 million patients and rising. However, cardiovascular toxicities associated with specific cancer therapeutics adversely affect the outcomes of patients with cancer. Advances in cardiovascular imaging have solidified the critical role for robust methods for detecting, monitoring, and prognosticating cardiac risk among patients with cancer. However, decentralized evaluations have led to a lack of consensus on the optimal uses of ima...

Effectiveness of Tofacitinib in Pre-adolescent Alopecia Areata: A Retrospective Case Series and Literature Review
Acta Derm Venereol. 2023 Sep 20;103:adv13418. doi: 10.2340/actadv.v103.13418.ABSTRACTAlopecia areata (AA) is a common cause of hair loss in children. Despite numerous therapeutic options for paediatric AA, none have been found to be both effective and safe. Recent studies have demonstrated the efficacy and safety of the Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor tofacitinib in adult patients with AA, whereas data on paediatric patients with AA in real-world practice are limited. This was a single-centre, retrospective study that included 11 pre-adolescent patients with AA treated with tofacitinib between December 2021 and September 2022...

Relationship Between Standardized Measures of Chronic Kidney Disease-associated Pruritus Intensity and Health-related Quality of Life Measured with the EQ-5D Questionnaire: A Mapping Study
Acta Derm Venereol. 2023 Sep 20;103:adv11604. doi: 10.2340/actadv.v103.11604.ABSTRACTChronic kidney disease-associated pruritus is linked with decreased health-related quality of life assessed using disease-specific instruments. The extent to which worsening pruritus reduces generic quality of life assessed using the EQ-5D instrument is unknown. Prevalent kidney failure patients receiving in-centre haemodialysis from 5 centres completed the EQ-5D-5L quality of life measure, worst Itching Intensity Numerical Rating Scale and 5-D itch pruritus instruments. Latent class models were used to identify clusters of patients with s...

High levels of uric acid inhibit BAT thermogenic capacity through regulation of AMPK
Am J Physiol Endocrinol Metab. 2023 Sep 21. doi: 10.1152/ajpendo.00092.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHyperuricemia (HUA) is strongly associated with the increasing prevalence of obesity, but the underlying mechanism remains elusive. Dysfunction of brown adipose tissue (BAT) could lead to obesity. However, studies on the role of HUA on BAT are lacking. Our retrospective clinical analysis showed that serum uric acid (UA) is significantly associated with BAT in humans. To investigate the role of UA in regulating BAT function, we used UA to treat primary brown adipocytes (BAC) in vitro and established HUA mice. In vitro ...
