Global Trends in Highly Cited Studies in COVID-19 Research
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: This study found that the total number of highly cited studies related to COVID-19 peaked at the end of 2021 and showed a downward trend until the end of 2022, while the origin of these studies shifted from China to the US and UK.PMID:37682572 | DOI:10.1001/jamanetworkopen.2023.32802

< em > In vitro < /em > activity of sanitizers against mono- and polymicrobial biofilms of < em > C. parapsilosis < /em > and < em > S. aureus < /em >
In this study, we investigated the impact of 11 different commercial sanitizers at various concentrations and exposure times on biofilms consisting of clinical and nosocomial environmental isolates of Candida parapsilosis and Staphylococcus aureus. Among the sanitizers tested, 0.5% and 2.0% chlorhexidine (CLX), 10% polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP-I), a disinfectant based on quaternary ammonium compound (QAC), 2% glutaraldehyde, and 0.55% orthophthalaldehyde (OPA) demonstrated efficacy against both C. parapsilosis and S. aureus in monospecies and mixed biofilms. Analysis showed that 0.5% CLX and 10% PVP-I had fungicidal and bact...

Comparative study about ozonation to treat Microcystis-laden source water at the development and maintenance stage
Chemosphere. 2023 Sep 6:140045. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.140045. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe outbreak of toxic cyanobacteria blooms is hazardous to water safety. Ozonation has been used to treat cyanobacteria-laden source water. Generally, cyanobacterial blooms enter into a long-term maintenance stage from the bloom development, but how the changed bloom stage affects ozonation is still unknow. Herein, influences of ozonation on cell inactivation and microcystin removal of Microcystis at the development and maintenance stage, were investigated. Then, ozonation-assisted coagulation for Microcystis removal at th...

A fully integrated duplex RT-LAMP device for the detection of viral infections
In this study, we showed and evaluated a prototype of a microfluidic system, and showed that duplex RT-LAMP can detect and distinguish between the two viruses, with LoDs of 2,000 copies/ml for bovine coronavirus and 200 copies/ml for influenza A/X-31 virus.PMID:37682413 | PMC:PMC10491696 | DOI:10.1007/s10544-023-00676-w

Broad-Spectrum Antiviral Effect of Cannabidiol Against Enveloped and Nonenveloped Viruses
Conclusions: It was demonstrated that CBD inhibits structurally dissimilar viruses, suggesting that this phytochemical has broad-spectrum antiviral effect, representing a valuable alternative in emergency situations during viral outbreaks, like the one caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 in 2020.PMID:37682578 | DOI:10.1089/can.2023.0103

< em > Serratia marcescens < /em > Outbreak at a Correctional Facility: Environmental Sampling, Laboratory Analyses and Genomic Characterization to Assess Sources and Persistence
We describe an environmental sampling and comparative genomics approach used to investigate a multi-year outbreak of S. marcescens at a correctional facility. Whole genome sequencing analysis revealed a predominant cluster of clonally related S. marcescens from nine patient cases and items associated with illicit drug use. Closely related strains found among items associated with case-patient cells and diluted Cell Block 64 (CB64), a quaternary ammonium disinfectant, and Break Out (BO), a multipurpose cleaner, highlighted their role as environmental reservoirs for S. marcescens in this outbreak. Comparative genomic analysi...
