Achieving COVID-19 zero without lockdown, January 2020 to March 2022: The Taiwan model explained
J Formos Med Assoc. 2023 Sep 13:S0929-6646(23)00345-5. doi: 10.1016/j.jfma.2023.09.001. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDespite never imposing a lockdown, Taiwan achieved COVID-19 zero, with reporting only 56 local coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases after testing 126,987 individuals in 2020, and further contained a large outbreak rapidly and successfully in 2021. At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, our infectious disease modeling results indicated that testing and contact tracing alone would fail to contain the pandemic. However, by supplementing this approach with general public surgical mask-wearing, the reproduc...

J Formos Med Assoc. 2023 Sep 13:S0929-6646(23)00338-8. doi: 10.1016/j.jfma.2023.08.024. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSleep disordered breathing (SDB) is highly prevalent and may be linked to cardiovascular disease in a bidirectional manner. The Taiwan Society of Cardiology, Taiwan Society of Sleep Medicine and Taiwan Society of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine established a task force of experts to evaluate the evidence regarding the assessment and management of SDB in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), hypertension and heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). The GRADE process was used to assess the...

Acute invasive fungal rhinosinusitis in post-COVID-19 patients in Vietnam
CONCLUSION: The presence of meningitis upon initial diagnosis is related to a significantly higher chance of developing a fatal outcome and should be considered, especially in AIFR patients previously treated for COVID-19 infections. Early diagnosis, early use of antifungal agents, aggressive surgical debridement, and control of comorbid conditions remain crucial in managing AIFR.PMID:37714767 | DOI:10.1016/j.jfma.2023.08.030

Experiences and expectations of physician communication: A focus group discussion with Indian patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus
CONCLUSIONS: The medical encounter with the physician elicited a range of negative experiences and clear expectations from the patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This pilot points to the need for (a) a mixed methods approach to comprehensively examine the communication needs of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus from their physician, (b) understand physicians' communication practices, and (c) using these findings, culturally adapt and test the Relationship: Establishment, Development, and Engagement to improve physicians' communication skills in India.PMID:37710965 | DOI:10.1177/17423953231200683

Protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis of tobacco-cessation interventions delivered perioperatively
Introduction Tobacco smoking is associated with a substantially increased risk of perioperative complications. The perioperative period is an opportunity to introduce tobacco-cessation strategies. A previous systematic review provided evidence that perioperative interventions increase short-term abstinence and may reduce postoperative complications. The evidence base has since expanded, with the subsequent publication of numerous randomised studies. This protocol outlines a systematic review examining the impact of perioperative tobacco-cessation interventions on successful abstinence from tobacco smoking, and on the incid...

Analysis and comparison of clinical practice guidelines regarding treatment recommendations for chronic tinnitus in adults: a systematic review
Conclusions There were notable differences with respect to whether guidelines considered the available evidence sufficient enough to make a recommendation. Notably, we identified substantial differences in the rigour of guideline design and development. Reporting was poor in many guidelines. Future guidelines could benefit from the use of reporting tools to improve reporting and transparency and the inclusion of guideline experts and patients to improve the quality of clinical practice guidelines on tinnitus.
