More time in a community setting: A service evaluation of the impact of intrathecal drug delivery systems on place of care of patients with cancer pain
CONCLUSION: In patients with advanced cancer, the successful establishment of intrathecal analgesia is associated with more time in the community and a lower morphine equivalent daily dose at end of life. The study has low numbers, and the sample was retrospectively selected. Nevertheless, these findings suggest the initial investment of time in an inpatient setting may be beneficial. Further research is required, using larger, prospective studies of patient outcomes in this setting.PMID:37632373 | DOI:10.1177/02692163231191548

Robust optimization of a radiotherapy pretreatment preparation workflow
Phys Med Biol. 2023 Aug 25. doi: 10.1088/1361-6560/acf437. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTObjective:Increasing cancer incidence, staff shortage and high burnout rate among radiation oncologists, medical physicists and radiation technicians is putting many departments under strain. Operations research (OR) tools could optimize radiotherapy processes, however, clinical implementation of OR-tools in radiotherapy is scarce since most investigated optimization methods lack robustness against patient-to-patient variation in duration of tasks. By combining OR-tools, a method was developed that optimized deployment of radiotherapy ...

Dermatological Issues Among Individuals Receiving Palliative Care - A Review
Am J Hosp Palliat Care. 2023 Aug 25:10499091231198752. doi: 10.1177/10499091231198752. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSkin disorders among individuals receiving palliative care may be associated with the primary condition or underlying comorbidities and patients may experience pruritus, discomfort or pain. Common conditions include xerosis, pressure ulcers, intertrigo, superficial fungal infections, telogen effluvium, pruritus, herpes zoster, eczematous disorders and edema. During end-of-life care, there is reduced skin perfusion and metabolism hence leading to susceptibility to infection, pressure and injury. Other factors...

NeoTalk: Communication Skills Training for Neonatal Clinicians
CONCLUSIONS: A multi-disciplinary cohort of NICU providers endorsed increased confidence in key communication skills but not increased skill application 2-months post-course completion. While a single course can successfully teach skills, additional exposure may be necessary to build new communication habits. Our experience developing NeoTalk helped elucidate some of the ways in which conversations about seriously ill infants may be different from conversations about seriously ill adults.PMID:37622177 | DOI:10.1177/10499091231198507
