Comparative Studies of Essential Oil Composition and Biological Activities of Callistemon citrinus from western Himalaya
Chem Biodivers. 2023 Sep 20:e202301129. doi: 10.1002/cbdv.202301129. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis work described a comprehensive study to estimate chemical constituents of essential oils (EOs) extracted from different parts of the Callistemon citrinus viz: fruits, leaves and aerial part. The EOs were characterized using physicochemical parameters, and GC-FID/MS. It was observed that among different parts, aerial part has the highest oil yield (0.90%) followed by leaves and fruits. Further, seventeen compounds were characterized, and represented total amount (97.2-99.5%) with domination of monoterpenes (12.5-34.6%) an...

Oil structuring from porous starch to powdered oil: Role of multi-scale structure in the oil adsorption and distribution
This study compared the role of multi-scale structure of porous starch (PS) prepared by normal and waxy maize starch in the oil adsorption. Waxy maize porous starch exhibited higher oil adsorption capacity (32.43 %-98.71 %) and more oil distributed on the surface of granules than normal maize porous starch, resulting from the more pores, larger specific surface area (1.01-1.53 m2/g), and pore size (8.45-9.32 nm). The enzymolysis time of native starch dominated oil distribution, leading to different granule adhesion and aggregation state. Pearson correlation analysis further showed oil adsorption capacity was negatively cor...

Xanthan and gum acacia modified olive oil based nanoemulsion as a controlled delivery vehicle for topical formulations
In this study, olive oil nanoemulsion modified with xanthan gum and gum acacia was explored as a potential controlled topical delivery vehicle. Oil-in-water nanoemulsion formulated with optimized composition of olive oil, tween 80, and water was used as the drug carrier and further modified with gum. Effect of gum on nanoemulsion different physiochemical characteristics, stability, rheology, drug release and encapsulation efficiency were investigated. Results showed that developed nanoemulsion behaved as low viscosity Newtonian fluid and released 100 % drug within 6 h. Modification with xanthan and gum acacia had significa...

Continuous-Flow Microreactor Accelerates Molecular Collisions for Lignin Depolymerization to Phenolic Monomers and Oligomers
In this study, we developed a continuous-flow microreactor for depolymerization of lignin into monomeric and oligomeric compounds. The yields of monomers and oligomers can be adjusted by varying the temperature, pressure, residence time, NaOH dosage, and solvent. Under optimized conditions, the lignin conversion rate was 77.73 wt %, and the monomer yield was 13.26 wt %, with 77.81% being phenolic compounds. In addition, comparative characterizations on the raw lignin and products demonstrated that the oil products were mainly composed of phenolic tetramers and trimers, and the effective cleavage of the β-O-4 linkage of S-...

Structural variations of lignin and lignin-carbohydrate complexes from the fruit shells of Camellia oleifera during ripening
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Sep 16:126946. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126946. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCamellia oleifera fruit shell (CFS), a waste lignocellulosic biomass resulting from Camellia oleifera oil production industry, is abundantly available in Southern China. Herein, to understand the structural variations of CFS lignins and lignin-carbohydrate complexes (LCC) during ripening, the native lignin and LCC fractions from CFS (harvested every seven days from October 1 to 30, 2022) were isolated and characterized systematically. The molecular weights of both MWL and DEL fractions steadily increased during ripen...

Fabrication and characterization of new levan@CBD biocomposite sponges as potential materials in natural, non-toxic wound dressing applications
In this study, porous bacterial levan-based sponges containing cannabis oil (Lev@CBDs) were prepared and fully characterized. The sponges exhibited a suitable swelling ratio, proper water vapor transmission rate, sufficient thermal stability, desired mechanical properties, and good antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The obtained Lev@CBD materials were evaluated in terms of their interaction with proteins, human serum albumin and fibrinogen, of which fibrinogen revealed the highest binding effect. Moreover, the obtained biomaterials exhibited antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas ae...

Essential Oils from Different Parts of Magnolia laevifolia: Chemical Constituents and Insecticidal Activities against Liposcelis bostrychophila
This study extracted EOs from leaves, flowers, carpels and seeds of M. laevifolia. The common and major compound of EOs was isocapnell-9-en-8-one, which was present at 17.7 to 91.6% in these four parts We found no regular pattern in the composition of EO in terms of parts and collection time according to principal component analysis. The contact and repellent activities of EOs against the booklouse were then conducted. Leaves and flowers' EOs collected in the flowering stage had the best contact toxicity. The percent repellency values of the EOs from different parts of M. laevifolia reached above 80% after 2 and 4 h exposu...
