Spontaneous Intracranial Hypotension in Pregnancy
AbstractPurpose of ReviewSpontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) is a debilitating disease typically featuring orthostatic headache and caused by a spinal CSF leak. This review will describe the characteristics of SIH in pregnant patients and the associated unique management and treatment considerations.Recent FindingsHerein, a novel case is reported of a 41-year-old woman who presented with SIH pre-conception but saw marked improvement of symptoms after 5  weeks antepartum and symptom recurrence 2 months post-partum. A literature review of SIH in pregnancy revealed 14 reported patients across 10 studies since 2000. A...

The Potential Role of Probiotics in the Management of Osteoarthritis Pain: Current Status and Future Prospects
AbstractPurpose of ReviewThis narrative review article comprehensively explains the pathophysiology of osteoarthritis (OA) pain perception, how the gut microbiota is correlated with it, possible molecular pathways involved in probiotics-mediated OA pain reduction, limitations in the current research approaches, and future perspectives.Recent FindingsThe initiation and progression of OA, including the development of chronic pain, is intricately associated with activation of the innate immune system and subsequent inflammatory responses. Trauma, lifestyle (e.g., obesity and metabolic disease), and chronic antibiotic treatmen...

Early experience with percutaneous balloon kyphoplasty for treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture in Nepal: A case report
We present a case of 68-year-old female with vertebral compression fracture of L1 vertebra with posterior cortical defect and posterior wall retropulsion. She was treated successfully with balloon kyphoplasty. Kyphoplasty appears to be a better option than vertebroplasty in cases with posterior cortical defect due to lower chance of cement leakage.

Current status and progress in research on dressing management for diabetic foot ulcer
Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a major complication of diabetes and is associated with a high risk of lower limb amputation and mortality. During their lifetime, 19%–34% of patients with diabetes can develop DFU. It is estimated that 61% of DFU become infected and 15% of those with DFU require amputation. Furthermore, developing a DFU increases the risk of mortality by 50%–68% at 5 years, higher than some cancers. Current standard management of DFU includes surgical debridement, the use of topical dressings and wound decompression, vascular assessment, and glycemic control. Among these methods, local treatment with dress...

A Systematic Review on the Adult Alpha Brainwave Activity After Essential Oil Inhalation
Adv Exp Med Biol. 2023;1425:545-553. doi: 10.1007/978-3-031-31986-0_53.ABSTRACTAroma extracts from plant species have been utilized since ancient times for a variety of discomforting circumstances. Aromatherapy is a recognized complementary therapeutic treatment performed in various ways such as massage or dermal application, with its main uses involving relaxation, pain relief, and stress management. Several studies have outlined that inhalation of fragrance may influence the brain function since their components can cross the blood-brain barrier and interact with central nervous system receptors. The aim of this review w...

Cannabis for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: What is the patients' view?
This study is the first to present a large questionnaire-based survey about the "real-life" situation regarding cannabis use in the medical context in ALS patients in France. There were 129 respondents and 28 reported the use of cannabis (21.7%) to relieve symptoms of ALS. Participants mostly reported the use of cannabidiol (CBD) oil and cannabis weed and declared benefits both on motor (rigidity, cramps, fasciculations) and non-motor (sleep quality, pain, emotional state, quality of life, depression) symptoms and only eight reported minor adverse reactions (drowsiness, euphoria and dry mouth). Even if cannabis is mostly u...

Study protocol: randomised controlled trial of conditioned open-label placebo (COLP) for perioperative pain management in patients with head and neck cancer
Introduction Patients with head and neck cancer have a substantial risk of chronic opioid dependence following surgery due to pain and psychosocial consequences from both the disease process and its treatments. Conditioned open-label placebos (COLPs) have been effective for reducing the dose of active medication required for a clinical response across a wide range of medical conditions. We hypothesise that the addition of COLPs to standard multimodal analgesia will be associated with reduced baseline opioid consumption by 5 days after surgery in comparison to standard multimodal analgesia alone in patients with head and ne...
