Brain-computer interface relieves chronic chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial
CONCLUSIONS: BCI is a promising treatment for CIPN and may have a longer lasting effect than placebo (nonspecific BCI), which is an important consideration for long-term symptom relief. Although scientifically interesting, the ability to separate real from placebo treatment may not be as important as understanding the placebo effects differently from effects of the intervention.PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY: Chemotherapy-induced nerve pain (neuropathy) can be disabling for cancer survivors; however, the way symptoms are felt depends on how the brain interprets the signals from nerves in the body. We determined that the perception...

Therapeutic potential of targeting prokineticin receptors in diseases
This article reviews and summarizes our current knowledge of PK family functions from development of heart and brain to regulation of homeostasis in health and diseases. Finally, the review summarizes the established roles of the endogenous peptides, synthetic peptides and the selective ligands of PKR1 and PKR2, and nonpeptide orthostatic and allosteric modulator of the receptors in preclinical disease models. The present review emphasizes the ambiguous aspects and gaps in our knowledge of functions of PKR ligands and elucidates future perspectives for PK research. Significance Statement This review provides an in-depth vi...

Providing End-of-Life Care in the Community: What Are the Challenges in Malaysia?
J Hosp Palliat Care. 2022 Sep 1;25(3):133-137. doi: 10.14475/jhpc.2022.25.3.133.ABSTRACTA 72-year-old woman with metastatic lung cancer to bone and brain and with left external iliac vein thrombosis was under the care of a community palliative care provider. She experienced an acute pain crisis due to acute limb ischemia of the left lower limb. Goals-of-care discussions were held with the patient and her family; she prioritized symptom control and end-of-life care at home. The family and patient were aware of her short prognosis. Her complex pain was managed by the community palliative team, and her family was empowered to...

Protein kinase C epsilon activation regulates proliferation, migration, and epithelial to mesenchymal-like transition in rat Schwann cells
DISCUSSION: PKCε mediates relevant actions in the neuronal and glial compartment of the PNS. In particular, we posit a novel function for PKCε in the transformation of SCs, assuming a role in the mechanisms controlling SCs' fate and plasticity.PMID:37645595 | PMC:PMC10461112 | DOI:10.3389/fncel.2023.1237479

Effects of mitragynine on viability, proliferation, and migration of C6 rat glioma, SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma, and HT22 immortalized mouse hippocampal neuron cell lines
This study aimed to investigate the antitumor effects of MG in C6 rat glioma and SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma tumor cell lines compared with those in the non-tumor HT22 mouse hippocampal neuronal cell line. MTT assay for cell viability, clonogenic and wound healing assays for cell migration, Hoechst 33342/propidium iodide staining for nuclear morphology, and cell cycle distribution using flow cytometry were performed. MG at 125.47 μM (50 μg/ml) significantly reduced the viability of all cell lines, and the clonogenicity of C6 glioma cells began decreasing at 75.28 μM (30 μg/ml) of MG. Cell migration was inhibited in C6 ...

Repetitive and compulsive behavior after Early-Life-Pain associated with reduced long-chain sphingolipid species
CONCLUSION: The results suggest that ELP may predispose to chronic "pain" and compulsive psychopathology in part mediated by alterations of sphingolipid metabolism, which have been previously described in the context of addiction and psychiatric diseases.PMID:37635256 | DOI:10.1186/s13578-023-01106-3

Too Little Sleep Destroys DNA?
I talk to my patients about the danger of not sleeping all the time. Unfortunately, it’s a common problem that affects 75 million Americans. People who don’t sleep, or sleep poorly, have up to 400% more accidents that those who get a good night’s rest. Not getting enough sleep also increases your risk of developing chronic diseases. Studies, including a large meta-analysis of 470,000 adults, found that those who slept less than six hours developed a:1,2,3,4,5 48% increase in the incidence of coronary heart disease 30% increased risk of dementia 15% increase in the incidence of stroke 50% cancer risk 17% higher risk ...

A Mega-Ethnography of Qualitative Meta-Syntheses on Return to Work in People with Chronic Health Conditions
CONCLUSIONS: RTW is a multifactorial and highly interactive multistakeholder process, embedded in an individual's life and working history, as well as in a determined social and societal context. It runs parallel and interdependently to the process of coping with the disease and realigning one's own identity, thus emphasizing the significance of RTW for the person. Besides symptoms and consequences of the disease, individual coping strategies, and RTW motivation, the course and success of RTW are strongly affected by the adaptability of the person's working environment and the social support in their private and working li...

Evidence- and data-driven classification of low back pain via artificial intelligence: Protocol of the PREDICT-LBP study
by Daniel L. Belavy, Scott D. Tagliaferri, Martin Tegenthoff, Elena Enax-Krumova, Lara Schlaffke, Bj örn Bühring, Tobias L. Schulte, Sein Schmidt, Hans-Joachim Wilke, Maia Angelova, Guy Trudel, Katja Ehrenbrusthoff, Bernadette Fitzgibbon, Jessica Van Oosterwijck, Clint T. Miller, Patrick J. Owen, Steven Bowe, Rebekka Döding, Svenja Kaczorowski In patients presenting with low back pain (LBP), once specific causes are excluded (fracture, infection, inflammatory arthritis, cancer, cauda equina and radiculopathy) many clinicians pose a diagnosis of non-specific LBP. Accordingly, current management of non-specific LBP is ge...

Effect of postoperative application of esketamine on postoperative depression and postoperative analgesia in patients undergoing pancreatoduodenectomy: a randomized controlled trial protocol
In this study, we aim to investigate the effect of esketamine on postoperative depression and pain in patients undergoing PD.Methods/designThis prospective, single-center, randomized control trial will include 80 patients who will undergo elective PD. The patients will be randomly assigned to two groups: the experimental group that will receive esketamine (n = 40) and the control group (n = 40). In the esketamine group, the analgesic pump will be connected immediately after surgery. A solution of esketamine 1.5 mg/kg + sufentanil 2 µg/kg, diluted to 150 mL, will be administered continuously for 72 h at the...

Central nervous system metastasis in a young female patient with primary mediastinal large B-cell lymphoma: A case report and literature review
CONCLUSION: Till date, only a few cases of central nervous system (CNS) metastasis have been reported in the literature. Moreover, CNS metastasis of refractory PMBCL is an uncommon event with a poor prognosis. Brain metastases are often the ultimate fatal consequence of many aggressive cancers, so early detection and treatment are important.PMID:37560590 | PMC:PMC10408608 | DOI:10.25259/SNI_414_2023

Breast cancer metastases to the thyroid and stomach: A case report
Oncol Lett. 2023 Jul 20;26(3):386. doi: 10.3892/ol.2023.13972. eCollection 2023 Sep.ABSTRACTThe most common sites of metastasis for breast cancer are the soft tissues, bones, lungs, liver and brain; however, metastases to the gastrointestinal tract and thyroid gland from breast cancer rarely occur. The present study describes the case of a 30-year-old woman who developed gastric and thyroid metastases 5 years after her initial diagnosis of invasive ductal breast carcinoma. The initial pathological diagnosis when receiving modified radical mastectomy was invasive ductal carcinoma, and further immunohistochemical examination...
