Current Neurostimulation Therapies for Chronic Pain Conditions
AbstractPurpose of ReviewNeurostimulation treatment options have become more commonly used for chronic pain conditions refractory to these options. In this review, we characterize current neurostimulation therapies for chronic pain conditions and provide an analysis of their effectiveness and clinical adoption. This manuscript will inform clinicians of treatment options for chronic pain.Recent FindingsNon-invasive neurostimulation includes transcranial direct current stimulation and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, while more invasive options include spinal cord stimulation (SCS), peripheral nerve stimulation ...

Changes in cognitive appraisal in a randomized controlled trial of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for patients with migraine
CONCLUSION: In this study, pain catastrophizing showed strong promise as a potential mechanism of MBCT-M. Future research should continue to explore cognitive appraisal changes in mindfulness-based interventions.PMID:37723970 | DOI:10.1111/head.14627

Effect of electrical and chemical (activation versus inactivation) stimulation of the infralimbic division of the medial prefrontal cortex in rats with chronic neuropathic pain
This study aimed to investigate the participation of the infralimbic division (IFL) of the mPFC in chronic NP, as well as the role of the N-methyl-D-aspartic acid receptor (NMDAr) in the elaboration of chronic NP. Male Wistar rats were submitted to the von Frey and acetone tests to assess mechanical and cold allodynia after 21 days of chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the sciatic nerve or Sham-procedure ("false operated"). Electrical neurostimulation of the IFL/mPFC was performed by low-frequency stimuli (20 μA, 100 Hz) applied for 15 s by deep brain stimulation (DBS) device 21 days after CCI. Either cobalt chloride (C...

Serum tau protein elevation in migraine: a cross-sectional case –control study
DiscussionMigraine is associated with t-tau elevation in serum but not in the CSF. Our clinical study identifies t-tau as a new target for migraine research.

European Headache Federation (EHF) critical re-appraisal and meta-analysis of oral drugs in migraine prevention —part 2: flunarizine
ConclusionsPublished flunarizine trials predate the recommended endpoints for evaluating migraine prophylaxis drugs, hence the lack of an adequate assessment for these endpoints. Further, modern-day, large ‐scale studies would be valuable in re-evaluating the efficacy of flunarizine for the treatment of migraines, offering additional insights into its potential benefits.

Efficacy of a strength-based exercise program in patients with chronic tension type headache: a randomized controlled trial
ConclusionA 12-week strength training of neck and shoulder region induced changes in pain intensity and duration, and physical-related factors in patients with TTH. Future interventions are needed to investigate if normalization of pain characteristics and physical factors can lead to an increase of headache-related impact.

Efficacy and safety of intranasal agents for the acute treatment of migraine: a systematic review and network meta-analysis
ConclusionsCompared with other new intranasal-specific therapies in treating migraine attacks, zolmitriptan nasal spray 5  mg was the most effective agent for pain freedom at 2 h. Zavegepant nasal spray 10 mg had the fewest adverse side effects.

Quality of life in children suffering from headaches: a systematic literature review
ConclusionThere is a need for a condition-specific PROM to facilitate the measurement of QoL outcomes in the pediatric headache population. A conceptual model was developed based on the findings from the health concepts. Findings from this review could be used for future qualitative interviews with pediatric patients with headaches to elicit and refine important QoL concepts.

Global, regional, and national epidemiology of migraine and tension-type headache in youths and young adults aged 15 –39 years from 1990 to 2019: findings from the global burden of disease study 2019
ConclusionMigraine and TTH represent formidable challenges in global health. The intensity of their impact exhibits marked disparities across nations and is distinctly elevated among women, individuals within the 30 –39 age bracket, and populations characterized by a high SDI. The results of our research emphasize the imperative of assimilating migraine and TTH management into contemporary healthcare paradigms. Such strategic integration holds the potential to amplify public cognizance regarding pertinent ris k factors and the spectrum of therapeutic interventions at hand.
