Association of mechanical temporal summation of pain with muscle co-contraction during walking in people with knee osteoarthritis
Central pain sensitization, assessed as mechanical temporal summation at the knee, is related to greater knee muscle co-contraction during fast walking in people with knee osteoarthritis. Thus, mitigating central sensitization may be an interventional target to reduce muscle co-contraction for people with knee osteoarthritis.

Development and temporal validation of clinical prediction models for 1-year disability and pain after lumbar decompressive surgery. The Norwich Lumbar Surgery Predictor (development version)
ConclusionImportant PROM predictors are baseline PROMs, specific co-morbidities, work status, condition duration, previous lumbar operation, female, and smoking status. The ODI model predicted the likelihood of achieving a satisfactory state of both disability and pain.

Intermediate and Long-Term Outcomes of the Universal 2 Total Wrist Replacement
Conclusion The Universal 2 poses a reasonable TWR implant choice for patients with debilitating arthritis. However, despite excellent short-term follow-up outcomes, longer term follow-up shows the design does continue to be plagued by implant failure and instability. Deep Learning: Orthopaedic Research Evolves for the Future
The practice of hip and knee arthroplasty has morphed since the turn of the century, as arthroplasty surgeons have been eager to adopt new technologies in attempts to continuously improve care. For example, in the year 2000, primary arthroplasty patients were routinely staying 5 to 7 days in the hospital [1] and requiring long-acting narcotics [2]. Today, patients are routinely discharged on the same day with well-controlled pain and even more frail patients only stay overnight. Of course, there is still room for improvement.

Beneficial and harmful effects of physical activity on care-seeking for low back pain: the AUTBACK study
ConclusionPeople who engage in higher baseline volumes of sedentary behaviour or physical activity in the household setting (e.g. housework, gardening, yard work, general household maintenance) utilise 1.6 times more care for LBP over 1 year. Findings suggest that higher volumes of these behaviours may be harmful for LBP. No intensities, volumes, or domains of physical activity demonstrated clear benefits for LBP. Where feasible, patients and clinicians should collaborate to screen and develop strategies to reduce engagement in sedentary behaviour or physical activity in the household setting. Contextual factors (e.g. pati...

Heat treatment for giant cell tumors of bone: A systematic review
J Orthop Surg (Hong Kong). 2023 Sep-Dec;31(3):10225536231202157. doi: 10.1177/10225536231202157.ABSTRACTThis systematic review evaluates the effects of heat treatments in de novo, residual and recurrent giant cell tumors of bone (GCTB). Studies were eligible for inclusion if one of the following treatments was administered: radiofrequency ablation (RFA), microwave ablation, argon cauterization, electrocauterization and hot liquid treatment. The primary outcome was recurrence. Secondary outcomes were complications, pain, function, and quality of life. Recurrence rates for microwave ablation as an adjuvant to intralesional c...

Prescription analgesic medication use among osteoarthritis patients
CONCLUSION: The use of gabapentinoid increased rapidly from recent decade, while opioids use did not decrease. The long-term excessive use of opioids was also a serious problem for OA pain control. More improvements such as focusing more on healthcare education and paying more attention on non-pharmacotherapy and the psychological situation of patients are needed.PMID:37724650 | DOI:10.1177/10225536231202835
