Study: Alcohol Is Leading Preventable Cause Of Cancer In U.S.
BOSTON (CBS) – Researchers in Boston have taken a good hard look at alcohol and cancer deaths. Dr. Timothy Naimi, at Boston University School of Medicine, says this is the first time in 30 years that researchers have looked closely at alcohol and cancer deaths. WBZ NewsRadio 1030′s Diane Stern reports Download: alcohol-cancer-doc-web-extended.mp3 “When it comes to alcohol consumption and cancers, clearly excessive drinking is the riskiest type of drinking,” Dr. Naimi said. “But when it comes to cancer, there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.” Res...

The effect of physical activity on the mental and physical health of childhood cancer survivors
Conclusions Exercise training improves aerobic fitness in childhood cancer survivors, yet the small sample size did not allow identification of additional expected benefits. Nevertheless, changes in fitness over 6 months were significantly correlated with measures of body composition, bone health and quality of life. Childhood cancer survivors should be continuously encouraged to exercise, in order to both improve their immediate well-being, and to decrease their risks for potential late effects of pediatric cancer. The study was funded by the Israel Cancer Association.

Abstract SS03-03: The promise and the challenge of personalized medicine: A patient advocate perspective
Discussion Paper" (http://pathways-project.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Patient-Voices-11-15.pdf) on the Patient Voices section of the Pathways webpage as a prelude to convening online Think Tank sessions to enhance awareness of and stimulate dialogue and action on these critical issues. The discussion paper—drafted as a starting point for more thorough investigation and reflection—and this presentation seek to focus the dialogue, pose necessary questions, obtain more than cursory acknowledgment, and engage diverse segments of the population (with patients at center) in considering and acting on the contradic...

Abstract SS03-01: Promise and pitfalls of personalized medicine from a clinical science perspective
Personalized medicine tailors treatment to meet an individual patient's needs and specific disease. While the idea of personalized medicine is not new, advances in biomedical science have evolved to target molecular pathways to reduce toxicity and provide more effective treatment options to patients with many common cancers. For a few cancers, such as breast cancer, biomarker assisted diagnoses and therapy have already replaced the standard "one size fits all" treatment. As our understanding of molecular genetics increases we will be able to offer tailored cancer therapy to more patients, however, the cost of cancer care w...

Abstract IA40: Maximizing the benefits of precision medicine for cancer disparities
Disparities, defined as differences that are unnecessary and avoidable, exist in cancer incidence, mortality, and survival. They occur by race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, geography (rural versus urban), and other factors. Although cancer deaths for all types of cancer decreased for both African-Americans and whites in the United States between 1999 and 2011, for example, African-American males and females had both higher cancer incidence and cancer mortality than white males and females and showed less marked improvement over that time period.Warnecke and colleagues published a multi-level framework of the determinant...

The intersection of oral medicine and interprofessional education
Medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, dental hygiene, physician assistants, physical therapy, nutrition, and many other health care professions aim to provide the best and the safest available health care to patients with a variety of health conditions. Owing to advances of medical sciences observed in recent years, patients have their diseases diagnosed earlier, receive adequate treatment, and survive much longer. Nevertheless, what quality of life do they have, and what complications may result from their health care? A patient may be receiving treatment for several medical diseases/conditions and being managed by a nu...

Personalized medicine: Moving from correlation to causality in breast cancer
Discussion Our preliminary results begin to approach the specificity and sensitivity of the Gail model (AUC=0.957 (Gail model) and 0.745 (physiological model)) and further refinement is ongoing. By contrast, our model presents the opportunity to more directly personalize risk assessment based on an individual patient’s characteristics and present the potential to develop management plans to reduce potential risk and to identify potential opportunities for biomarker/diagnostic development (and therapeutics) based on the specifics of the disease process unique to the patient.
