Synthetic Turf Fields, Crumb Rubber, and Alleged Cancer Risk
AbstractMost synthetic turf fields have crumb rubber interspersed among the simulated grass fibers to reduce athletic injuries by allowing users to turn and slide more readily as they play sports or exercise on the fields. Recently, the crumbs have been implicated in causing cancer in adolescents and young adults who use the fields, particularly lymphoma and primarily in soccer goalkeepers. This concern has led to the initiation of large-scale studies by local and federal governments that are expected to take years to complete. Meanwhile, should the existing synthetic turf fields with crumb rubber be avoided? What should p...

Treatment of severe rash caused by crizotinib with both traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine: Two case reports and literature review
Rationale: Lung adenocarcinoma is the most common pathologic pattern of lung cancer. During the past decades, a number of targeted agents have been explored to treat advanced lung adenocarcinoma. Recently, Crizotinib, the antagonist of anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK), has been widely used in ALK-rearranged lung cancer treatment. Crizotinib is generally well tolerated while its most frequent adverse events include visual disorders, gastrointestinal disturbances, cardiac and endocrine abnormalities. Rash caused by crizotinib is rarely seen, and there are few case reports of severe rash caused by crizotinib. Patient conce...

Abstract IA38: NCI MATCH: A national precision medicine trial - Conception, development, and adjustment
Precision medicine trials aim to provide evidence that targeting particular molecular abnormalities with specific treatment will result in better efficacy than current methods. While we know certain instances where the tumor type influences response to these agents, there are other instances where responses can be seen in various malignancies if they have the same molecular abnormality. Currently we do not know much about why some tumors or even most tumors will respond to a treatment, given the same mutation, and some do not. NCI MATCH is a national signal-finding trial for patients with solid tumors or lymphomas that hav...

Highlights lecture EANM 2015: the search for nuclear medicine ’s superheroes
AbstractThe EANM 2015 Annual Congress, held from October 10th to 14th in Hamburg, Germany, was outstanding in many respects. With 5550 participants, this was by far the largest European congress concerning nuclear medicine. More than 1750 scientific presentations were submitted, with more than 250 abstracts from young scientists, indicating that the future success of our discipline is fuelled by a high number of young individuals becoming involved in a multitude of scientific activities. Significant improvements have been made in molecular imaging of cancer, particularly in prostate cancer. PSMA-directed PET/CT appears to ...

Developments for Personalized Medicine of Lung Cancer Subtypes: Mass Spectrometry-Based Clinical Proteogenomic Analysis of Oncogenic Mutations.
Authors: Nishimura T, Nakamura H Abstract Molecular therapies targeting lung cancers with mutated epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) by EGFR-tyrosin kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs), gefitinib and erlotinib, changed the treatment system of lung cancer. It was revealed that drug efficacy differs by race (e.g., Caucasians vs. Asians) due to oncogenic driver mutations specific to each race, exemplified by gefitinib / erlotinib. The molecular target drugs for lung cancer with anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) gene translocation (the fusion gene, EML4-ALK) was approved, and those targeting lung cancers addicted ROS1, R...

The traditional Korean herbal medicine Ga-Gam-Nai-Go-Hyan suppresses testosterone-induced benign prostatic hyperplasia by regulating inflammatory responses and apoptosis.
Authors: Shin SJ, Lee KH, Chung KS, Cheon SY, An HJ Abstract Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a pathological condition that affects the majority of men above the age of 50 years. Pharmacological agents are typically used to treat BPH; however, there are currently no pharmacological agents that are able to completely cure BPH without causing adverse side effects. As a result of these side effects, there is a great interest in developing effective herbal medicines that are able to inhibit the progression of BPH and are safe for long-term use. Ga-Gam-Nai-Go-Hyan (GGN) is a traditional Korean herbal medicine that ...

Adult Stem Cells and Medicine.
Authors: Bozdağ SC, Yüksel MK, Demirer T Abstract Stem cells can be either totipotent, pluripotent, multipotent or unipotent. Totipotent cells have the capability to produce all cell types of the developing organism, including both embryonic and extraembryonic tissues. The Hematopoietic Stem Cells (HSC) are the first defined adult stem cells (ASC) that give rise to all blood cells and immune system. Use of HSCs for treatment of hematologic malignancies, which is also called bone marrow (BM) transplantation or peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) transplantation is the pioneer of cellular therapy and translational r...

Future of Theranostics: An Outlook on Precision Oncology in Nuclear Medicine
Molecular alterations in malignant disease result in the expression or upregulations of various targets that can be used for imaging and treatment with radiopharmaceuticals. This theranostic principle has acquired greater importance in personalized medicine in recent years, particularly in oncology, where advanced tumors can be treated effectively with low side effects. Since the pioneering use of 131I in differentiated thyroid cancer in the 1940s, remarkable achievements in nuclear medicine endoradiotherapy have been demonstrated, mainly in the treatment of neuroendocrine neoplasms by using 177Lu-labeled somatostatin anal...
