New concussion guidelines: Q & A with a sports medicine physician
For the last few years, concussions have been on the forefront of the minds of parents, coaches and athletes across the country, as their risks and prevalence become more well-known. This increase in visibility has raised a lot of concern about both the immediate and potential long-term effects of concussions sustained by children and adolescents. Luckily, research efforts have also increased, leading to a better understanding of how concussions should be managed in young athletes. At the 5th International Conference on Concussion in Sport held in Berlin, Germany, physicians and researchers around the world came together t...

Impaired sports performance of athletes suffering from pollen-induced allergic rhinitis: a cross-sectional, observational survey in German athletes.
CONCLUSIONS: This study confirmed a high prevalence of pollen allergy among German athletes. The majority of allergic rhinitis athletes were undertreated and the reason could be their reservations about allergy treatments. Pollen allergy tremendously reduced sports performance of athletes during the pollen season. This impact can be lessened with proper treatment such as immunotherapy. Better understanding of available treatment modalities should be provided to patients and physicians to improve sports performance of athletes suffering from pollen allergy. IJERPH, Vol. 18, Pages 7110: Telemedicine as a Therapeutic Option in Sports Medicine: Results of a Nationwide Cross-Sectional Study among Physicians and Patients in Germany
Conclusion: Telemedicine in sports medicine has seen limited use but is highly accepted among physicians and patients alike. The absence of a structured framework is an obstacle to effective implementation. Training courses should be introduced to improve the limited knowledge regarding the use of telemedicine. More research in telemedicine in sports medicine is needed. This includes large-scale randomized controlled trials, economic analyses and explorations of user preferences.

Physiological factors which influence the performance potential of athletes:Analysis of sports medicine performance testing in Nordic combined.
CONCLUSION: In this study, test speed on the treadmill [m/s] at a lactate concentration of 4 mmol/l showed the strongest influence that was independent of other parameters on the sporting performance of the Nordic combined athletes. Regardless of how the lactate threshold is determined, a lactate value of 4 mmol/l should almost always be above an indicative anaerobic threshold, meaning that the application of this parameter is more valid than using an arbitrary individual threshold, both physiologically and mathematically. In this vein, the test speed at a lactate concentration of 4 mmol/l can be recommended as a robuster,...

Epidemiology of Injuries in Olympic Sports
Int J Sports Med DOI: 10.1055/a-1641-0068Injuries effect the performance of athletes. Severity of injuries is determined by time loss and sporting performance reduction. To treat injuries adequately, it is necessary to get an overview of varied injuries types in different sports disciplines. In a retrospective study 7.809 athletes from Germany, Switzerland and Austria competing in competitive or recreational levels of sports were included. Injury prevalence was highest in team sports (75%), followed by combat (64%), racquet (54%) and track and field (51%). Knee (28%) and shoulder (14%) we...

Prevalence and frequency of menstrual cycle symptoms are associated with availability to train and compete: a study of 6812 exercising women recruited using the Strava exercise app.
CONCLUSION: Menstrual cycle symptoms are very common in exercising women, and women report that these symptoms compromise their exercise participation and work capacity. The MSi needs to be formally validated (psychometrics); at present, it provides an easy way to quantify the frequency of menstrual cycle symptoms. PMID: 33199360 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Impact of COVID-19 lockdown on endurance capacity of elite handball players.
CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 lockdown led to a reduction in endurance capacity of elite handball players without team training, despite a home-based strength and endurance program. Supervision of individual home-based training is highly recommended to avoid inadequate implementation of the training. PMID: 33269880 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Fractures in German elite male soccer.
CONCLUSIONS: This study can confirm that male professional soccer teams experience 1-2 fractures per season in German elite soccer. The incidence of fractures in elite German soccer players decreased between 2009 and 2016. The most fractures occur in the lower extremities and there is no difference in overall fracture risk for players at different playing positions. The information from our study might be of a great importance to medical practitioners, soccer coaches and soccer manager. PMID: 29083129 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
