Preliminary antimicrobial evaluation of DAS-77®—A polyherbal medicine
This study was therefore aimed at scientifically evaluating the antimicrobial activity of DAS-77®. The antimicrobial activity of the aqueous extract was determined using the agar-well diffusion method. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of ciprofloxacin and tetracycline were 50μg/ml and 62.5μg/ml, respectively, for both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, while that of the extract was 100mg/ml and 50mg/ml respectively. However, the extract did not show any inhibitory effect against Enterococcus faecalis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The study showed that the extract was more active against the gram-negative bac...

Case-Case Analysis Using 7 Years of Travelers' Diarrhea Surveillance Data: Preventive and Travel Medicine Applications in Cusco, Peru.
Abstract In Cusco, Peru, and South America in general, there is a dearth of travelers' diarrhea (TD) data concerning the clinical features associated with enteropathogen-specific infections and destination-specific risk behaviors. Understanding these factors would allow travel medicine providers to tailor interventions to patients' risk profiles and travel destination. To characterize TD etiology, evaluate region-specific TD risk factors, and examine relationships between preventive recommendations and risk-taking behaviors among medium- to long-term travelers' from high-income countries, we conducted this case-ca...

Literature Update in Hospital Medicine
Publication date: April 2014 Source:Hospital Medicine Clinics, Volume 3, Issue 2 Author(s): William Southern , Bradley A. Sharpe , Romsai Tony BoonyasaiTeaser Perioperative statins reduce perioperative myocardial infarctions, atrial fibrillation, and length of stay. Statins do not increase the risk of intracranial hemorrhage. New oral anticoagulants are superior to warfarin in preventing stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation, and may have a better safety profile. In patients who have an acute gastrointestinal bleed while on warfarin, restarting warfarin after a week may lead to fewer thromboses and lower mortality ...

Antibiotic prophylaxis of travellers' diarrhoea in athletes
Conclusions The results show that the introduction of prophylactic Rifaxamin has produced a significant reduction in the number of cases of TD. Oral Rifaxamin is now routinely offered (and accepted) by Hockey teams travelling to countries with high risk of TD and the incidence has reduced to almost negligible levels, thus ensuring athletes, and staff, are available for training and matches more often. After 18 months, there have been no cases of tendon rupture, which has been the worry when taking oral Ciprofloxacin.

Medicine-Induced Acute Kidney Injury Findings from Spontaneous Reporting Systems, Sequence Symmetry Analysis and a Case –Control Study with a Focus on Medicines Used in Primary Care
ConclusionThis research highlights a number of medicines that may contribute to acute injury; however, we had an insufficient sample to confirm associations of some medicines. Spironolactone, furosemide, and trimethoprim with sulfamethoxazole are medicines that, in particular, need to be used carefully and monitored closely in patients in the community at risk of acute kidney injury.

Prostate cancer topography
Conclusions TRUS-guided prostate biopsy is an effective method for detecting and locating prostate cancer. Tissue core samples obtained during prostate biopsy serve as sufficient diagnostic material for a histopathologist. In our study population, cancer was located most frequently in the middle part of the prostate gland.

Effects of Catheter Tracking Management on Urinary Tract Function and Infection Rates in Patients With Spinal Cord Injury
CONCLUSIONS: For patients with SCIs, catheter follow-up management can be helpful in restoring the function of the bladder and urinary tract, can improve patients' QoL, and reduce their rate of UTIs. Clinically, medical practitioners should select antibiotics reasonably according to a bacterial culture and drug-sensitivity test.PMID:36634314
