Phytochemicals for Improving Aspects of Cognitive Function and Psychological State Potentially Relevant to Sports Performance
AbstractSubjective alertness and optimal cognitive function, including in terms of attention, spatial/working memory and executive function, are intrinsic to peak performance in many sports. Consumption of a number of plant-derived ‘secondary metabolite’ phytochemicals can modulate these psychological parameters, although there is a paucity of evidence collected in a sporting context. The structural groups into which these phytochemicals fall—phenolics, terpenes and alkaloids—vary in terms of the ecological roles they play for the plant, their toxicity and the extent to which they exert direct effects on brain func...

Substance Misuse in Elite Athletes
Sports medicine physicians and athletic trainers regularly encounter athletes who misuse substances that put them at risk for adverse health, social, interpersonal, academic, psychological, and performance effects. The three most encountered substances are alcohol (binge drinking), cannabis (marijuana), and tobacco/nicotine vaping. Early detection using self-report screening instruments, adverse consequences questionnaires, and urine testing are reviewed. Brief interventions that involve personalized feedback, goal setting, support system involvement, psychoeducation, contingency management, and/or motivational interviewin...

Should We be Concerned with Nicotine in Sport? Analysis from 60,802 Doping Control Tests in Italy
ConclusionsThe current data demonstrates that one in five samples from a range of 90 sports test positive for nicotine in-competition. There is a lower positivity rate in endurance versus power/strength athletes and higher positivity rate in team versus individual sports, probably accounted for by differences in physiological and psychological demands and the desire for socialisation. WADA, international and national sports federations should consider these findings with concern, proactively investigate this phenomenon and act in order to protect the health and welfare of its athletes.

Nicotine: Sporting Friend or Foe? A Review of Athlete Use, Performance Consequences and Other Considerations
AbstractNicotine use amongst athletes is high and increasing, especially in team sports. This narrative review examines the rationale behind its use and evidence of its effect on physical performance, and considers important factors that should determine future research efforts. To date, ten studies have assessed muscular strength and power, sub- or maximal endurance and high-intensity exercise when nicotine (medication) or smokeless tobacco was used as an intervention. Two studies observed an ergogenic effect, one an ergolytic with the remaining seven reporting no change. These studies have notable limitations and confoun...

Patriots-Texans Week 11 Predictions
BOSTON (CBS) — The Patriots are riding what is known as a winning streak. They’ll look to keep that going this Sunday when they visit the 2-7 Houston Texans. The Patriots can get back to .500 for the season with a third straight win. And really, they can’t follow up last Sunday night’s dramatic upset win over the Baltimore Ravens with a stinker against the lowly Texans. The Patriots already have their “bad loss” for the season, losing to the Broncos at home last month, so there can be no hiccups the rest of the way. Every game is a playoff game for New England if they want to make it to ...

The Effect of Smoking on Rotator Cuff and Glenoid Labrum Surgery: A Systematic Review
Conclusion: Smoking has a negative influence on RCR clinical outcomes and is associated with decreased healing of small-medium RTC tears after repair. The current literature suggests a negative influence of nicotine and smoking on RCR from both a basic science and clinical outcomes perspective. Smoking cessation would benefit patients undergoing RCR and improve clinical outcomes. The relationship of smoking and labral/SLAP repair or articular cartilage is less clear. Further research is needed to evaluate associations with these surgeries and outcomes. Clinical Relevance: Smoking has a negative influence on RCR clinical o...

The Prevalence of Symptomatic Deep Venous Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction
Conclusion: The incidence of VTE after ACL reconstruction in this large population was low. Increased odds of VTE was identified in patients aged ≥35 years with a history of nicotine use, anticoagulant use, concomitant HTO, or concomitant PCL reconstruction. Controlled studies are necessary to determine the efficacy of chemoprophylaxis and to develop evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to minimize VTE after ACL reconstruction.

Making Them Commit: Strategies to Influence Phenotypic Differentiation in Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Tendon injuries, bone defects, and cartilage defects are complex clinical conditions leading to pain and dysfunctions. Tendon, bone, and cartilage are highly specialized and organized tissues, and the self-healing may be limited by their histologic features, or impaired by the local conditions. Furthermore, the resultant tissue often shows inferior properties compared with native tissue, leading to high rates of reruptures and revision surgeries. A growing field of research has explored tendon, bone, and cartilage regeneration using mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), because of their multipotency, and because they are relative...

Description and Early Outcomes of a Comprehensive Curriculum Redesign at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine
In 2012, the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine launched a redesigned curriculum addressing the four primary recommendations in the 2010 Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching report on reforming medical education. This new curriculum provides a more standardized evaluation of students’ competency achievement through a robust portfolio review process coupled with standard evaluations of medical knowledge and clinical skills. It individualizes learning processes through curriculum flexibility, enabling students to take electives earlier and complete clerkships in their preferred order. The ne...

Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems or E-cigarettes: American College of Preventive Medicine's Practice Statement
ConclusionsThe American College of Preventive Medicine developed practice recommendations that include encouraging screening for ENDS use, strategies to prevent the initiation of ENDS use in nonsmokers, particularly in youth, adoption of a harm reduction model for smokers intending to quit in those who refuse or fail to quit with evidence-based smoking-cessation methods, recommendations on policy and regulatory strategies to decrease public use of ENDS and regulation of their components, and future research needs.
