Establishing a Global Standard for Wearable Devices in Sport and Fitness: Perspectives from the New England Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine Members.
Abstract The recent explosion of wearable technology and the associated concerns prompted the International Federation of Sports Medicine (FIMS) to create a quality assurance standard for wearable devices, which provides commissioned testing of marketing claims and endorsement of commercial wearables that test favorably. An open forum as announced in the conference advertising was held at the Annual Meeting of the New England Regional Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine (NEACSM) November 7 to 8, 2019, in Providence, Rhode Island, USA for attending NEACSM members to voice their input on the process. ...

New concussion guidelines: Q & A with a sports medicine physician
For the last few years, concussions have been on the forefront of the minds of parents, coaches and athletes across the country, as their risks and prevalence become more well-known. This increase in visibility has raised a lot of concern about both the immediate and potential long-term effects of concussions sustained by children and adolescents. Luckily, research efforts have also increased, leading to a better understanding of how concussions should be managed in young athletes. At the 5th International Conference on Concussion in Sport held in Berlin, Germany, physicians and researchers around the world came together t...

'Big Five of sports medicine: preparation, teamwork, passion, mentorship and collaboration
As BJSM Senior Associate Editor for Sports Cardiology since 2008, I have witnessed our discipline of sports medicine come of age. BJSM's goal of helping to unite our field is coming into sight, and the world of sports medicine has never felt closer. As I write this, 23 BJSM affiliated societies from 16 countries are celebrated on a prominent international stage. Collaboration among countries has become both the norm and the foundation of new learning, strategic partnerships and key initiatives for athlete safety and health promotion. ‘Big Five’ The power of international collaboration was on prominent display a...

Protecting the health of the @hlete: how online technology may aid our common goal to prevent injury and illness in sport.
Abstract Online technology dominates our era and eHealth has become a reality for sports clinicians and researchers. Contemporary online platforms enable self-monitoring and provide tailored feedback to the different stakeholders who play a role in the health and care of athletes. Innovations such as digital monitoring, mobile applications and connected hardware provide the critical tools to solve current enigmas in sports medicine research, and to streamline and facilitate injury prevention, management and rehabilitation. eHealth is not an emerging future of sports medicine-the technology to move our field forwar...

AMSSM: increasingly valuable for primary care sports and exercise medicine physicians
The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) is a jewel in the global primary care sports and exercise medicine crown. In a very competitive market for their society dollars, US primary care physicians vote overwhelmingly for AMSSM, giving it a landslide victory. Membership is (almost) universal because of the benefits such as education and research support combined with networking opportunities. Conference attendance climbs year over year. Quality sponsors such as Donjoy (DJO) add substantial value (eg, travelling fellowship programme). Membership is available for less than the price of a kid's phone (US$400)....

The IOC Diploma programme in sports physiotherapy
In recognition of the important role physiotherapists play in the medical care of athletes, the Medical Commission of the IOC is about to launch a postgraduate-level training programme in sports physiotherapy. At the 2014 IOC World Conference in prevention of Injuries and Illness in Sport, Lars Engebretsen (IOC Head of Scientific Activities) highlighted that this initiative is a part of the IOC's ongoing commitment to the protection of athletes’ health, and it builds on IOC's existing training programmes including the IOC Diplomas in Sports Nutrition and Sports Medicine.1 The programme is designed to meet the needs o...

Onwards and upwards: BASEM provides a smorgasbord of practical, convenient educational opportunities for practitioners of sport and exercise medicine
Welcome to the British Association of Sport and Exercise Medicine (BASEM) 2015 issue of BJSM. As I am writing this, I am starting to ‘Hear the Dragon Roar’ calling us to Cardiff—one of the proud hosts of the year's Rugby World Cup. The Future of Virtual Sports Ultrasound Education and Collaboration.
Abstract ABSTRACT: Sports ultrasound (US) is a rapidly advancing and expanding field, where "hands-on" education and real-time instructor feedback are paramount in developing this skill. In light of a global pandemic and limited access to instructors and educational conferences, sports US education must adapt to continue to teach future ultrasonographers. Virtual US education, conducted using various virtual meeting platforms not only allows for continued didactic education but also can virtually recreate the "hands-on" training sessions with live, immediate instructor feedback that is necessary for acquiring comp...

See, hear and empower women: it is time to 'walk the walk to eliminate manels in sport and exercise medicine/physiotherapy
The ‘manel’—all-male panel1—in sport and exercise medicine/physiotherapy is a powerful and visible symbol of gender inequality.2 The ‘manel’ normalises the absence of women leaders (role models),3 erodes women’s confidence and ambition2 and stunts the depth and development of sport and exercise medicine/physiotherapy.3 To combat this, the British Journal of Sports Medicine (BJSM) developed its conference ‘stamp of approval’,4 which requires more than 40% women faculty and scientific committee members. Perhaps the best example of a ‘manel’ elimination strateg...

Under-researched populations and topics in sport and exercise medicine (SEM)
In this South African Sports Medicine Association (SASMA) edition of BJSM, we spotlight work on under-researched populations and topics in sport and exercise medicine (SEM). These populations include youth sport, para athletes, women’s sport, and trans and gender non-conforming (TGNC) athletes. The topics include lesser-understood concussion risk factors such as personal protective equipment, COVID-19 and how para football players perceive concussion. We also include topics on the internal consistency of mental health tools in youth sport, and the challenges of working in SEM—from undergraduate medical training...

Autologous blood derived signaling proteins (sp) for tendon and muscle therapy in sports medicine. higher concentration of growth factors (gf) and cytokines in orthokine vs in acp
Discussion: Oe and Ax are used clinically. Degranulating platelets and other blood cells contribute to blood borne GF and cytokine output. Oe gains from all blood cells. Ax gains from 85% platelets. Oe's high IL-1Ra and GFs explain its profound (anti-inflammatory) action [Wehling et al. Biodrugs 2007;21(5):323–332]. Ax is not PRP, provides less SP than Oe. Muscle and tendon repair with Oe has been shown [Heisterbach et al. KSSTA 2012;10:1907–14, Majewski et al. Am J Sports Med 2009;11:2117–25, Wright-Carpenter et al. Int J Sports Med 2004;25:582–587 & 588–593]. Oe and Ax are used in joint ...
