Evaluation of internet-based patient education materials from internal medicine subspecialty organizations: will patients understand them?
AbstractThe majority of Americans use the Internet daily, if not more often, and many search online for health information to better understand a diagnosis they have been given or to research treatment options. The average American reads at an eighth-grade level. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the readability of online patient education materials on the websites of 14 professional organizations representing the major internal medicine subspecialties. We used ten well-established quantitative readability scales to assess written text from patient education materials published on the websites of the major professio...

Interactions Between Physicians and Skilled Home Health Care Agencies in the Certification of Medicare Beneficiaries' Plans of Care: Results of a Nationally Representative Survey.
Conclusion: The CMS-485 does not meaningfully engage physicians. Physicians spend little time reviewing or acting on the SHHC plan of care. Strategies to enhance meaningful communication between SHHC agencies and physicians are needed. Primary Funding Source: National Institute on Aging and National Institute of Mental Health. It wasn ’t long ago that emergency medicine as a recognized specialty did not exist, and our Board was overseen by several other recognized Boards. We were not permitted to have subspecialties nor accredited fellowships, and were treated as the “red headed stepchild” of medicine. Now, not only are we our own specialty with all the privileges of certification and subspecialty, but we have inserted our specialty into other areas of the medical arena, including palliative care, sports medicine, and critical care.

SHM celebrates 25th anniversary as the home for hospital medicine
A little more than a quarter-century ago the emergence of the new medical specialty of hospital medicine was signaled in a New England Journal of Medicine article that defined it by the location for its practice: within the acute hospital. Dr. Wachter Practitioners of this new specialty were dubbed hospitalists in the 1996 article by Robert Wachter, MD, MHM, an internal medicine doctor at the University of California San Francisco, and colleague Lee Goldman, MD.1 They brought widespread attention to this new style of medical practice that was already emerging in hospitals around the country where primary care physicians ...

"Getting Along": The Utilization of the Myers-Briggs Model in the Nuclear Medicine Department
Conclusions: Nuclear medicine is a highly inter-disciplinary field and collaboration between colleagues is essential to facilitate efficacy. The Myers-Briggs model highlights each physician’s role in the department. While no personality type is superior to another, the variability in preferences allows for each individual to contribute a unique perspective and skill to the nuclear medicine team, enhancing our ability to provide superior patient care. Extending the Depth and Breadth of Physiatry Care: Five Strategies for Residents to Develop a Foundation in Hospice and Palliative Medicine
Hospice and palliative medicine is one of seven accredited fellowship subspecialties available to graduates of physical medicine and rehabilitation residency programs. Hospice and palliative medicine and physical medicine and rehabilitation share many of the same principles and practices, and physical medicine and rehabilitation residency training can be excellent preparation for hospice and palliative medicine fellowship. However, unlike the other six physical medicine and rehabilitation subspecialties, there is currently no requirement for hospice and palliative medicine training during physical medicine and rehabilitati...

Undergraduate education in palliative medicine in Germany: a longitudinal perspective on curricular and infrastructural development
Conclusions: Until now, teaching conditions and structures in palliative medicine in Germany have proven to be extraordinarily heterogeneous. Although professorships (“Chairs”) in palliative medicine proved to be particularly beneficial and supportive in curricular and structural development, only a minority of faculties provide leading academic positions in palliative medicine.

Nuclear Medicine Technologist
Conclusions I-131- MIBG therapy for neuroblastoma in children is a growing treatment regimen. However, it’s use is limited by access to centers who are equipped to provide the agent in a safe setting. The nuclear medicine technologist is a key player in all aspects of this therapeutic regimen from receiving the dose to patient discharge. Doses to the technologists, nurses, doctors and family members can be kept as low as reasonably achievable when a regimented protocol is followed and all team members are kept well informed.

Some General Considerations of a Human-Based Medicine's Palliative Approach to the Vulnerability of the Multiply Disabled Child Before the End of Life.
Abstract Specificities of situation of individuals with multiple disabilities and pediatric neurological pathologies call for specialized and multi-field competences that are commonly allowed and disallowed in contemporary clinical contexts. However what must be questioned in this matter is not only the meaning of the clinical, social, and human approach that is implemented, but also its spirit. The aim of medicine is double: to offer a technoscientific capacity (to cure as much as it is possible and always relieve suffering) and guarantee the meaning and value of the child's human and social capacities. We sugges...

Impact and Reception of a Required 4-Week Palliative Medicine Rotation.
CONCLUSIONS: Formal HPM training should be a required component in residency education and considerations should be given to the 4-week format. This rotation provides a model that can be implemented in other residency programs nationally. Implementation of this rotation may help close the enormous gap of patients not receiving quality EOL care. PMID: 29669147 [PubMed - in process]

Exploring Change After Implementation of Family Medicine Residency Curriculum Reform.
CONCLUSIONS: Family medicine graduates report an increase in intention to include a broader range of clinical domains after implementation of Triple C. While a causal relationship cannot be determined, using a historical control in the form of survey data that predates Triple C implementation could support future approaches to evaluation of education reform. The State of Palliative Care Education in United States Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Programs: Heterogeneity and Opportunity for Growth
We report national survey results characterizing the current status of palliative care education within US physical medicine and rehabilitation residency programs. Programs vary widely in the type and amount of palliative care education provided, with nearly a third of responding programs reporting no palliative care education at all. These findings suggest the need for nationally unifying palliative care education standards for physical medicine and rehabilitation residency programs to ensure that all physical medicine and rehabilitation residents have the opportunity to develop a robust palliative lens that can be applie...
