Why Acupuncture Is Going Mainstream in Medicine
When the opioid addiction crisis began to surge in the U.S. about a decade ago, Dr. Medhat Mikhael spent a lot of time talking to his patients about other ways to heal pain besides opioids, from other types of medications to alternative treatments. As a pain management specialist at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, Calif., he didn’t anticipate leaving behind the short-term use of opioids altogether, since they work so well for post-surgical pain. But he wanted to recommend a remedy that was safer and still effective. That turned out to be acupuncture. “Like any treatment, acupuncture...

Synchronized Pedaling with Martial Arts Improves Quality of Life of Women with Breast Cancer
This study evaluated the effect of a new martial arts program that combined aerobic endurance and muscle strength exercises on improving upper limb function and aerobic performance of women who have undergone breast cancer surgery. Fifty-three women who had previously undergone breast cancer surgery with axillary lymph node dissection, radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy participated in the twelve-week program. Participants were randomly assigned to two groups; a study group (28 participants) in which participants carried out a synchronized pedaling with martial arts routine of 2 sessions per week, and a control group (22 par...

Resistance Exercise Modulates Kynurenine Pathway in Pancreatic Cancer Patients
Int J Sports Med DOI: 10.1055/a-1186-1009The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of Supervised and Home-based resistance exercise on the Kynurenine pathway in patients with pancreatic cancer who underwent surgery and chemotherapy. In the SUPPORT study, adult pancreatic cancer patients were randomized to intervention programs of 6-month (1) a Supervised moderate-to-high-intensity progressive resistance training or (2) unsupervised Home-based resistance training, or (3) to a standard care patient Control group. Serum levels of kynurenine, tryptophan and IL-6 were assessed for 32...

Exercise prehabilitation during neoadjuvant chemotherapy may enhance tumour regression in oesophageal cancer: results from a prospective non-randomised trial
CONCLUSION: The results suggest improved tumour regression and downstaging in the exercise intervention group and should prompt larger studies on this topic.TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT03626610.PMID:35105604 | DOI:10.1136/bjsports-2021-104243

Letter to the Editor on: “The Effects of Physical Exercise on Tumor Vasculature: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.”
Int J Sports Med 2022; 43: 286-287 DOI: 10.1055/a-1754-3323Dear Editor,We read with interest the recent article “The Effects of Physical Exercise on Tumor Vasculature: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis” 1 and after careful appraisal and consideration we feel that some aspects of the data and analysis warrant further review. The study reported some promising results, namely that both chronic and acute exercise appear to improve intratumoral vascularisation in animal models. This is an important finding given increased vascularisation through tumor modulation may have the potential to impr...

Association between physical activity and the time course of cancer recurrence in stage III colon cancer
CONCLUSIONS: In this observational study of patients with stage III colon cancer, postoperative physical activity is associated with improved disease-free survival by lowering the recurrence rate within the first year of treatment, which translates into an overall survival benefit.PMID:36878665 | DOI:10.1136/bjsports-2022-106445

Mesothelioma Patients Benefit from Integrative Medicine Expert
Dr. Ka-Kit Hui is no expert on mesothelioma cancer, but he helps mesothelioma patients live longer and better lives every day. Committed to teaching the benefits of integrative medicine, Hui’s vision blends the best of traditional Chinese and conventional Western medicines, skillfully bridging the gap between the two. He launched the UCLA Center for East-West Medicine in 1993 — one of the first integrative medicine centers in the U.S. — leading it to national prominence. Clinically proven to improve health and healing, its programs often increase survival time. “Our hope is to do things that improve the quality o...

Alternative Medicine Alone Leads to Lower Cancer Survival
Cancer patients who opt for alternative therapy instead of conventional medicine significantly decrease their chances of survival, according to researchers at Yale School of Medicine. Although the popularity of alternative medicine continues to grow, a recent study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found survival rates significantly reduced for those who use it as first-line therapy. Conventional cancer treatments — chemotherapy, surgery and radiation — still produce a much better chance of survival. Mesothelioma was not included in the study, but the findings are relevant to this rare and aggr...

Effects of Integrated Chinese Traditional Medicine and Conventional Western Medicine on the Quality of Life of Breast Cancer Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
CONCLUSION: Traditional Chinese medicine, when used in conjunction with the conventional Western medicine, could be an effective way in improving the quality of life and alleviating incidence of associated adverse symptoms such as gastrointestinal adverse reactions, value of tumor markers, and the incidence of traditional Chinese medicine syndrome. Further investigation of larger and methodologically sound trials with longer follow-up periods and appropriate comparison groups is needed.PMID:35035500 | PMC:PMC8759913 | DOI:10.1155/2022/3123878

Experimental Research on the Antitumor Effect of Human Gastric Cancer Cells Transplanted in Nude Mice Based on Deep Learning Combined with Spleen-Invigorating Chinese Medicine
This article proposes the use of Chinese medicine to invigorate the spleen to inhibit human gastric cancer cells. This article combines modern machine learning technology with traditional Chinese medicine and combines traditional Chinese medicine physiotherapy with Western medicine nude mouse transplantation experiments. The treatment of tumors in Chinese medicine is based on the theory of Chinese medicine and has different characteristics. Western medicine has the advantage of permanently injuring patients. The process of the experiment is to transplant human-derived gastric cancer cells into nude mice. After grouping tre...
