Statin wars: have we been misled about the evidence? A narrative review.
Abstract Statins are the most widely prescribed, cholesterol-lowering drugs in the world. Despite the expiration of their patents, revenue for statins is expected to rise, with total sales on track to reach an estimated US$1 trillion by 2020. A bitter dispute has erupted among doctors over suggestions that statins should be prescribed to millions of healthy people at low risk of heart disease. There are concerns that the benefits have been exaggerated and the risks have been underplayed. Also, the raw data on the efficacy and safety of statins are being kept secret and have not been subjected to scrutiny by othe...

Effects of exercise training and statin on hemodynamic, biochemical, inflammatory and immune profile of people living with HIV: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.
CONCLUSIONS: ET improved the hemodynamic, biochemical, inflammatory, and immune profile of PLHIV and this effect was not dependent on the use of statins. PMID: 33124791 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The Participatory Approach to Personalized Medicine
Realizing personalized medicine’s full benefits will require active patient involvement. This is the first in a series of articles defining personalized medicine in the context of participatory medicine. The series will explore how current best practices can contribute to improved medical outcomes, reduced medication adverse reactions, increased patient satisfaction and overall value. What is “personalized medicine?” Personalized medicine, which is also called precision or individualized medicine, is an evolving field in which physicians use certain diagnostic tests to determine which medical treatments w...

The Effect of Diabetes, Hyperlipidemia, and Statins on the Development of Rotator Cuff Disease: A Nationwide, 11-Year, Longitudinal, Population-Based Follow-up Study
Conclusion: The present longitudinal, population-based follow-up study showed that either diabetes or hyperlipidemia alone was an independent risk factor for RCD development. Statin use might provide protection against RCD in patients with hyperlipidemia.

Bilateral Knee and Intermittent Elbow Pain in a Competitive Archer/Hunter: Phosphodiesterase-5-Inhibitor-Statin Interaction?
We report a case where such processes may have been occurring and may have resolved shortly after discontinuing concomitant use, in turn resulting in decreased pain. Clinicians may need to be aware of the possibility of such symptoms and processes occurring in patients taking both a statin and a PDE5I.

Drug-related problems identification in general internal medicine: The impact and role of the clinical pharmacist and pharmacologist.
CONCLUSION: Pharmacotherapy expertise during medical rounds was useful and well accepted by prescribers. Because of the modest allocation of pharmacists and pharmacologists in Swiss hospitals, complementary strategies would be required. PMID: 26066400 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Applied Pharmacogenomics in Cardiovascular Medicine.
Abstract Interindividual heterogeneity in drug response is a central feature of all drug therapies. Studies in individual patients, families, and populations over the past several decades have identified variants in genes encoding drug elimination or drug target pathways that in some cases contribute substantially to variable efficacy and toxicity. Important applications of pharmacogenomics in cardiovascular medicine include clopidogrel and risk for in-stent thrombosis, steady-state warfarin dose, myotoxicity with simvastatin, and certain drug-induced arrhythmias. This review describes methods used to accumulate a...

Acute-onset rhabdomyolysis secondary to sitagliptin and atorvastatin interaction
We present a case report of the interaction of two drugs that are used commonly in the general population. We here discuss a case of a 60-year-old female who presented to the hospital with complaints of generalized weakness, muscle aches, and atypical chest pain for a week after her primary care physician started her on sitagliptin while she was already on atorvastatin. After review of literature, this is the second known case of such an interaction causing acute breakdown of skeletal musculature. Keywords: rhabdomyolysis, drug interaction, statin–sitagliptin interaction

The Use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine Among Dialysis Patients.
Conclusions • The study found a lower prevalence of CAM consumption in dialysis patients than had been found in other studies of the general population. Still, the unawareness of the harm and potential interactions and the lack of data sharing between the patients and caregivers might have had disastrous consequences. Therefore, caregivers need to inquire of their patients specifically about their use of CAM, especially for populations with chronic diseases, let alone patients undergoing dialysis. Yangyin Qingre Huoxue Method in Traditional Chinese Medicine Ameliorates Atherosclerosis in ApoE-/- Mice Suffering from High-Fat Diet and HSP65 Aggression.
In this study, we evaluated the effects of Yangyin Qingre Huoxue Prescription (YQHP) on AS in ApoE-/- mice suffering from a high-fat diet and heat shock protein (HSP65) attack. YQHP regulated levels of blood lipids and inflammation-linked cytokines as well as Th17/Treg ratio in peripheral blood. Suppressed IL-6-p-STAT3 signaling and restored IL-2-p-STAT5 signaling in the presence of YQHP may partake in the regulation of Th17 and Treg differentiation. Moreover, YQHP modulated transcriptional levels of costimulator CD80 in aortas as well corresponding to the downregulation of GM-CSF in serum and CD3 expression in CD4+ T cell...

Personalized medicine in Hypercholesterolemia: The Role of Pharmacogenetics in Statin Therapy.
Authors: Ahangari N, Doosti M, Ghayour Mobarhan M, Sahebkar A, Ferns GA, Pasdar A Abstract Statins are the first-line choice in Lipid-lowering therapy to reduce cardiovascular risk. In a continuous attempt to optimize treatment success, there is a need for additional research on genes and related molecular pathways that can determine theefficacy and toxicity of lipid-lowering drugs. Several variations within genes associated with lipid metabolism, including those involved in uptake, distribution and metabolism of statins have been reported. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of genetic variationsi...
