Impaired sports performance of athletes suffering from pollen-induced allergic rhinitis: a cross-sectional, observational survey in German athletes.
CONCLUSIONS: This study confirmed a high prevalence of pollen allergy among German athletes. The majority of allergic rhinitis athletes were undertreated and the reason could be their reservations about allergy treatments. Pollen allergy tremendously reduced sports performance of athletes during the pollen season. This impact can be lessened with proper treatment such as immunotherapy. Better understanding of available treatment modalities should be provided to patients and physicians to improve sports performance of athletes suffering from pollen allergy. Stem cells, angiogenesis and muscle healing: a potential role in massage therapies?
Skeletal muscle injuries are among the most common and frequently disabling injuries sustained by athletes. Repair of injured skeletal muscle is an area that continues to present a challenge for sports medicine clinicians and researchers due, in part, to complete muscle recovery being compromised by development of fibrosis leading to loss of function and susceptibility to re-injury. Injured skeletal muscle goes through a series of coordinated and interrelated phases of healing including degeneration, inflammation, regeneration and fibrosis. Muscle regeneration initiated shortly after injury can be limited by fibrosis which...

Effects of Acupuncture, Moxibustion, Cupping, and Massage on Sports Injuries: A Narrative Review
Evid Based Complement Alternat Med. 2022 May 28;2022:9467002. doi: 10.1155/2022/9467002. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTWith the evolution of society, an increasing number of people have realized the importance of sports on human health. However, participation in sports is a double-edged sword as improperly exercising can lead to injury. Many athletes and patients with sports injuries choose traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) when modern medicine fails to relieve their musculoskeletal symptoms. TCM is a splendid legacy of Chinese civilization whose therapies are effective, economical, and convenient, with some administration by ...

Reliability of specific physical examination tests for the diagnosis of shoulder pathologies: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: This review identified a lack of high-quality studies evaluating inter-rater as well as intrarater reliability of specific physical examination tests for the diagnosis of shoulder pathologies. In addition, reliability measures differed between included studies hindering proper cross-study comparisons. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: PROSPERO CRD42014009018. Dietary supplements for treating osteoarthritis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: The overall analysis including all trials showed that supplements provided moderate and clinically meaningful treatment effects on pain and function in patients with hand, hip or knee osteoarthritis at short term, although the quality of evidence was very low. Some supplements with a limited number of studies and participants suggested large treatment effects, while widely used supplements such as glucosamine and chondroitin were either ineffective or showed small and arguably clinically unimportant treatment effects. Supplements had no clinically important effects on pain and function at medium-term and long-...

Return to play following injury: whose decision should it be?
Conclusions We found that differences in approach to RTP decisions were generally greater within versus between-stakeholder groups. If shared decision-making is to become the norm in clinical sport medicine, we need to begin a discussion on which discrepancies are due to lack of training (resolved through education) or scientific knowledge (resolved through research) or simply reflect the divergence of personal/societal values.

Integrating complementary/alternative medicine into primary care: evaluating the evidence and appropriate implementation
This article examines three of them: osteopathic manipulation, yoga, and acupuncture, with a focus on their physiological effects, efficacy in treating medical conditions commonly encountered by practitioners, precautions or contraindications, and ways in which they can be incorporated into clinical practice. Physicians should routinely obtain information about use of CAM as part of their patient history and should consider their role based on physiological effects and clinical research results. Keywords: integrative medicine, osteopathic manipulation, yoga, acupuncture therapyCorrigendum for this paper has been published.
