Mind-Body Therapies in the Management of Otolaryngologic Disease: A State-of-the-Art Review of Randomized Controlled Trials
CONCLUSION: RCTs of MBTs, including breathing exercises (4), aromatherapy (2), biofeedback (2), meditation, (2), and yoga (2), have been studied in several otolaryngologic conditions, including septoplasty/rhinoplasty (3), head and neck cancer (2), facial palsy (2), and tinnitus (2). Most studies were of moderate risk of bias on appraisal, and each MBT studied was found to significantly reduce subjective and objective distress associated with the otolaryngologic condition in question.IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Despite a paucity of strong evidence supporting the universal use of MBTs, our review suggests that MBTs are cost-...

Fractionated Stereotactic Radiotherapy compared to Stereotactic Radiosurgery for Vestibular Schwannoma in patients with type-2 Neurofibromatosis
CONCLUSION: In the NF2 population, FRT may yield worse control rates than SRS. Whenever possible, it is preferable to not fractionate treatment for these patients. FRT results, nevertheless, are still good. More and larger prospective trials are warranted.PMID:37657590 | DOI:10.1016/j.wneu.2023.08.110

The 5-Steps to Relieve Tinnitus
My patient T.K. was a wreck. He looked like he hadn’t slept in a week. I asked him what was going on. “It’s nothing you can fix, doc,” he said. “I’ve been to three specialists, and they all told me the same thing… “I’ve got tinnitus, and I just have to live with it.” Luckily, I was able to help him. Tinnitus is an aggravating, nerve-racking, and unseen condition. The constant ringing in your ears robs you of sleep, makes you miserable as it drowns out your hearing, and, over time, makes you more prone to illness. Tinnitus also shatters your focus and concentration. Sadly, up to 25% of the U.S. populatio...

Hearing screening and amplifier uptake results in a multidisciplinary head and neck cancer survivorship clinic
ConclusionsThe data from 1176 survivors of HNC seen by audiology over the past few years as part of the UPMC HNC Survivorship Clinic support the need for hearing management in this population to improve communication during and after the Survivorship Clinic visit.Implications for Cancer SurvivorsSurvivors of HNC have a high prevalence of greater than mild hearing loss and tinnitus (both issues known to negatively impact health-related communication and quality of life). This manuscript describes a hearing screening program within a Survivorship Clinic that identifies individuals in need of non-custom amplification during t...

Association Between Chronic Tinnitus and Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Antisense RNA Polymorphisms Linked to the Val66Met Polymorphism in BDNF
In conclusion, four of the polymorphisms in BDNF-AS gene (rs955946, rs1488830, rs1519480, and rs10767658) are potential gene loci that may play a role in the auditory pathway and affect auditory performance.PMID:37230202 | DOI:10.1016/j.gene.2023.147507

Prevalence and risk factors for ototoxicity after cisplatin-based chemotherapy
ConclusionsOtotoxicity risk factors included age, cisplatin dose, cardiovascular risk factors, and family history of hearing loss. Three of four TC survivors report some type of ototoxicity; thus, follow-up of cisplatin-treated survivors should include routine assessment for ototoxicity with provision of indicated treatments.Implications for Cancer SurvivorsSurvivors should be aware of risk factors associated with ototoxicity. Referrals to audiologists before, during, and after cisplatin treatment is recommended.

Tuning in to Your Most-Ignored Sense Can Make You Happier
Somewhere along the long, winding road of evolution, a bunch of genes got together in a conference room and decided it would probably be most optimal for human survival if we were forced to take in every sound all around us at all times. Thus, the ear was born. Unlike their neighbors the eyes, the ears came with no on/off option. This is a great safety feature if you’re living in a cave surrounded by predators, but it’s since been hijacked by a world in which you’re more likely to find yourself trying to sleep through a neighbor’s car alarm blaring at 1 A.M.
