Effective treatment of refractory tinnitus by bilateral deep brain stimulation of the medial geniculate body of the thalamus: A case report
Tinnitus is the perception of a sound in the absence of an audible source. In 1.2% of the population, tinnitus has a large impact on several aspects of daily life and is often accompanied by depression, anxiety and sleep disturbances [1]. Tinnitus is associated with high costs of care, as well as societal and economic burden [2]. Despite the large impact on a person ’s life, treatment options remain limited. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is considered a promising treatment for refractory tinnitus [3].

The 5-Steps to Relieve Tinnitus
My patient T.K. was a wreck. He looked like he hadn’t slept in a week. I asked him what was going on. “It’s nothing you can fix, doc,” he said. “I’ve been to three specialists, and they all told me the same thing… “I’ve got tinnitus, and I just have to live with it.” Luckily, I was able to help him. Tinnitus is an aggravating, nerve-racking, and unseen condition. The constant ringing in your ears robs you of sleep, makes you miserable as it drowns out your hearing, and, over time, makes you more prone to illness. Tinnitus also shatters your focus and concentration. Sadly, up to 25% of the U.S. populatio...

E-081 Endovascular treatment of pulsatile tinnitus caused by a dilated mastoid emissary vein: a case report and literature review
ConclusionEndovascular coil embolization appears to be an effective treatment for pulsatile tinnitus associated with MEVs, as demonstrated by our case and a review of existing literature. Despite the limited number of reported cases, the consistent success in symptom resolution suggests the potential for this treatment option in similar patients. Additionally, the endovascular approach is advantageous due to the ability to utilize BTO to evaluate symptomatic response prior to embolization. Further research with larger cohorts is needed to establish the long-term efficacy and safety of this approach.Abstract E-081 Figure 1A...

Prevalence of tinnitus and hyperacusis in 9 –12-year-old children
ConclusionsTinnitus and hyperacusis are prevalent in children aged 9 –12 years. Some of these children might be overlooked and, as such, not receiving the required follow-up or counselling. Development of guidelines for the assessment of these auditory symptoms in children would help to determine the prevalence numbers with greater accuracy. Sensibility campaigns for safe listening are warranted, as more than half of the children never use hearing protection.

IJERPH, Vol. 20, Pages 5509: REM Sleep Impairment May Underlie Sleep-Driven Modulations of Tinnitus in Sleep Intermittent Tinnitus Subjects: A Controlled Study
Conclusions: This study suggests that among the tinnitus population, patients displaying sleep-modulated tinnitus have deteriorated sleep quality. Furthermore, REM sleep characteristics may play a role in overnight tinnitus modulation. Potential pathophysiological explanations accounting for this observation are hypothesized and discussed.

Case-Control Study of Long COVID, Sapporo, Japan
Emerg Infect Dis. 2023 Apr 12;29(5). doi: 10.3201/eid2905.221349. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe conducted a cross-sectional survey among SARS-CoV-2-positive persons and negative controls in Sapporo, Japan, to clarify symptoms of long COVID. We collected responses from 8,018 participants, 3,694 case-patients and 3,672 controls. We calculated symptom prevalence for case-patients at 2-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12, and 13-18 months after illness onset. We used logistic regression, adjusted for age and sex, to estimate the odds ratio (OR) for each symptom and control reference. We calculated symptom prevalence by stratifying for disea...

Effect of Tinnitus on Sleep Quality and Insomnia

Prevalence of Self-Reported Bothersome Tinnitus in U.S. Army Soldiers From January 1, 2015, Through September 30, 2019
CONCLUSIONS: The self-reported prevalence of bothersome tinnitus in the U.S. Army (17.1%) is substantially higher than that of the general population, where prevalence of bothersome tinnitus is estimated at 6.6%. Examination of bothersome tinnitus among Soldiers is an important step toward optimizing prevention, education, and intervention efforts.PMID:36940481 | DOI:10.1044/2022_AJA-22-00201

Lifestyle and dietary interventions for M énière's disease
CONCLUSIONS: The evidence for lifestyle or dietary interventions for Ménière's disease is very uncertain. We did not identify any placebo-controlled RCTs for interventions that are frequently recommended for those with Ménière's disease, such as salt restriction or caffeine restriction. We identified only two RCTs that compared a lifestyle or dietary intervention to placebo or no treatment, and the evidence that is currently available from these studies is of low or very low certainty. This means that we have very low confidence that the effects reported are accurate estimates of the true effect of these interventions....
