The effect of lidocaine iontophoresis for the treatment of tinnitus: a systematic review
ConclusionsDue to the heterogeneity and the limited quality of the studies found, no clear statement can be made about the efficacy. The number of those who benefited from therapy varied widely. In addition, it cannot be ruled out that the effect was merely due to electrical stimulation of the cochlea.

Lidocaine injections to the otic ganglion for the treatment of tinnitus-A pilot study
Prog Brain Res. 2021;260:355-366. doi: 10.1016/bs.pbr.2020.08.006. Epub 2020 Oct 2.ABSTRACTTinnitus is defined as the perception of noise without an external acoustic stimulus. Due to the heterogeneity of tinnitus, no treatment has proven equally beneficial to every single of these patients. Previous studies have shown that trigeminal input can interfere with the perception of tinnitus. Therefore, we aimed to explore the therapeutic potential of lidocaine injections in trigeminal structures. We conducted a pilot study with 19 participants to explore feasibility and tolerability of this approach. The intervention consisted ...

Transdermal lidocaine as treatment for chronic subjective tinnitus: A pilot study
ConclusionsIn this preliminary study, 5% transdermal lidocaine appears to be a potential treatment for chronic subjective tinnitus. The majority of subjects who completed 1 month of treatment had clinically significantly improved tinnitus. These findings are confounded however by the small sample size and significant drop out rate.

Therapeutic Approaches to the Treatment of Tinnitus.
Abstract Tinnitus is a highly prevalent condition that is associated with hearing loss in most cases. In the absence of external stimuli, phantom perceptions of sounds emerge from alterations in neuronal activity within central auditory and nonauditory structures. Pioneering studies using lidocaine revealed that tinnitus is susceptible to pharmacological interventions. However, lidocaine is not effective in all patients, and no other drug has been identified with clear efficacy for the long-term treatment of tinnitus. In this review, we present recent advances in tinnitus research, including more detailed knowledg...

Pharmacotherapy for tinnitus: much ado about nothing.
CONCLUSIONS. The use of pharmacotherapy in reducing the severity of tinnitus is not well supported by prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials. Various drugs have been shown to be effective in some studies, but the clinical evidence is limited. Large randomized clinical trials are needed. PMID: 25059267 [PubMed - in process]
